CA: Infant fatally shoots girl, father charged

#1

Post by seamusTX »

In Fresno, Calilfornia, May 29, according to reports, a 2-year-old infant found a loaded .45-caliber pistol under his father's bed and fatally shot his 6-year-old step-sister.

Police seized a total of 53 firearms from the home following the shooting, including another loaded and unsecured handgun.

Today the father was charged with felony criminal storage of a firearm.

The suspect's attorney said many of the firearms belonged to the suspect's father, who teaches firearms classes for various children's organizations.

What makes this case unusual is that it did not involve felons, gangsters, or drugs. Many similar cases do.

I wonder if he didn't heed his own teachings, by allowing someone to store them unsecured around children!???

The earlier story apparently misquoted the lawyer, or else the lawyer made an unclear statement.

The suspect in this case, the father of the 2-year-old and step-father of the deceased 6-year-old, owns the 53 guns that police reportedly seized. He is the volunteer firearms safety instructor, not his father. He also served in the Marines.

The weapon that was used in the accident reportedly was a .45-caliber Springfield XD. It was left inside the unlocked factory case when the parents rearranged furniture.

He reportedly owns two safes.

The father in this case pled no-contest today.

I don't know the ins and outs of California law, but it looks like he will be found guilty of a felony and get probation.
