Good news. Both officers were released from the hospital Saturday night. HPD Chief Charles McClelland said they are "in good shape" and looking forward to getting back to work.
Ofc. Fernando Meza was working off-duty security at the bus station. He tried to approach the man, and an argument ensued. Meza pulled out his TASER and fired and the suspect a handgun and began exchanging fire with Meza. Meza was hit in the hand.
The suspect was suffered a bullet wound to the side and began shooting at Ofc. Timothy Moore, who responding to the original shooting call. Moore was struck once in the leg.
The standoff lasted about two hours. They found the suspect dead at about 7pm with what they believe to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

The downtown Houston Bus Station is not a place that I have ever considered safe. Just my opinion.

I have never been to the downtown Houston Bus Station, but in my experience most bus stations are in are in areas of cities that I would not visit under normal circumstances.

You owe it to yourself to go. For the best experience, bring bodyguards.
On a serious note, I am glad the LEO's were able to leave the hospital and go home to their families. They have my best wishes!

Any downtown bus station I have ever seen is not what I consider a safe place to be.

The latest report is that the person involved in the shoot out with HPD officers was a resident of Georgia and used a gun that was stolen from a Houston resident. The man's identity has not been released.

SAD.
I hope he is hired by another Agency quickly. I know I would want him to respond if I was in that situation.

No one would criticize an officer for an emergency assist to an injured officer if the action taken was reasonable - e.g., the incident location was very nearby and the officer notified his dispatcher of his actions. If not countermanded by a supervisor, he's good to go in that case.
Listening to a scanner, leaving an assigned post or district and self dispatching to a call in another part of the city without notifying dispatch sounds a lot like somebody who's looking for excitement that he doesn't often see and knows that his supervisor wouldn't allow him to go if he knew about it.
Houston is a big city with lots of well trained officers - I'm sure the response was more than adequate without the additional presence of a university officer, who couldn't even communicate with the Houston officers whose radios were on another frequency (remember he heard the call on a scanner, not on his own radio).
From the information provided in the brief news article, I see the action taken was appropriate.
