This is almost too weird to believe.

At the Denison Country Club in Grayson County (north of Dallas at the Oklahoma state line) Tuesday, a 58-year-old retired U.S. Air Force Major was golfing with his dog in the golf cart. (I don't know if this is normal, allowed by the club, or whatever. I don't even care.)

The dog got away. Witnesses heard a gunshot, and the dog returned, limping from an apparent gunshot wound. The dog is expected to survive.

The dog's owner confronted (my word) a resident at a property adjoining the golf course who was holding a rifle. Witnesses said they heard a gunshot and the dog owner/golfer fell to the ground.

In due course the man who was shot died, and police took the alleged shooter into custody. The suspect met $200,000 bail.

P.S.: The preliminary charge is murder [duh], and this is now nationwide news.

Also, the deceased man was allegedly killed by one shot from a .22 rifle.

No. Because of STUPIDITY on the part of the man with the rifle at the least. The other man could have also contributed his own STUPIDITY.

I noticed that comment, too about "blaming" it on the dog.

I wonder what this guy was thinking when he shot the man. Did he feel threatened? or whether he was just really mad? or ???

But when the group got to the third hole, Jim Steward said Marty hopped out of the cart and trotted over to a nearby home to frolic with some other dogs.

And [Smith] turned around and started walking that way and said, ‘If you’re gonna shoot my dog, shoot me.’

Officials said McInchak had shot him in the chest with a .22 caliber rifle from about 25 feet away.

"Frolic" could look like an attack, in which case shooting the dog becomes reasonable under Health and Safety Code 822.013. As for shooting the owner, if you're standing there with a gun in your hand, and some guy keeps approaching you telling you to shoot him, are you going to wait until he's close enough to grab your gun? Smith was 4 feet outside the Tueller Drill minimum distance when he was shot.

I'm sure that a defense attorney will have no trouble at all convincing a jury that the man's actions were reasonable.

This is why I don't like to play golf. Very dangerous what with golf balls and bullets flying around. I prefer the safety of the gun range.
