A Houston man named Perry Mason was arrested, accused of practicing law without a license. The 43-year-old has been charged with barratry, a third-degree felony.
For some of you youngsters, Perry Mason was a TV show, starring Raymond Burr, about a defense lawyer who never lost a case. The show orgininally aired 1957-65.
IMO, this show probably is probably responsible for more misinformation about the court system and practice of law that any other TV series or movie in history. Perry Mason was such a great attorney that he could intimidate witnesses so they would break down sobbing and confess to a murder while on the witness stand.

Wow. And to think my doctor, Dr. Kildare, just recommended Mr. Mason last week.
Not only is it hilarious that a guy whose real name is Perry Mason would be arrested for practicing law without a license, but I even learned a new word!

"Barratry?" I had to look that one up, too.Skiprr wrote:Wow. And to think my doctor, Dr. Kildare, just recommended Mr. Mason last week.

Another thing that I didn't realize was the author [and former lawyer] Erle Stanley Gardner wrote more than eighty Perry Mason novels which sold more than 135 million copies.

The books are quite good -- better than the old TV series -- well worth a read!WildBill wrote:Another thing that I didn't realize was the author [and former lawyer] Erle Stanley Gardner wrote more than eighty Perry Mason novels which sold more than 135 million copies.

Thanks for the link. It brings a whole new perspective to the orginal story. The headline of the first story was very misleading and the story made no mention of a real lawyer being involved.i8godzilla wrote:I think this is also a related story:
