A Liberty County, Texas man is accused of creating fake receipts as part of a scheme to defraud Walmart. Deputies say Christopher Coker, 27, used computers and a thermal imaging device to replicate receipts from Walmart. The sheffir's office described the fake receipts are described as "very accurate" and "close in almost every detail." Saw a show on shoplifting on CNBC yesterday (maybe day before). Wow. This is big business.

One guy who now advises the authorities said he could get $12,000 worth of merchandise in 8 hours. The theif gets 10 cents on the dollar (rough numbers) and the fence sells it for 50 cents on the dollar at flea markets (better know as thieves' bazaars in olden days).

The crooks like it as a profession because it is safer than assaults or armed robbery and if they get caught they don't get much punishment.

This guy had a different angle perhaps trading the stolen items for cash thus getting $1 on the dollar...

It would be interesting to see a family portait. I suspect family trees in the "Big Thicket" don't have many branches?

You reckon he did all of his refunds at his nearest Wal-Mart, maybe the one where his relative/s worked?

The investigation is continuing and deputies say more arrests are expected.

Are you suggesting that people from Liberty County are inbred? His system seemed pretty complex and high tech so I really don't follow your logic. The story makes no mention of him using the reciepts to return merch., rather he would just walk out without paying by showing his reciept at the door.

Saw the same show. I am amazed how clever people are in their thievery. In an actual tape of a theft, a guy wheels a small motor cycle up to the cashiers desk and asks to return the item. The clerk correctly asks for his receipt and he has none. The clerk correctly refuses to refund his money. Disgruntled the customer wheels the motor cycle out of the store. Earlier he had removed the motorcycle from a store display on the other side of the store.

The guy creating these receipts surely had a scam similar to the crooks featured in the CNBC program. They are clever; you can't deny that. Its just that they are crooks. Seems it would be easier and more pleasant to make an honest living than to deal with the constant guilt of being a criminal.

These receipts crimes are rampant in the South. There are crime rings that run from California to Louisiana hitting every store they see. They can print directly from a laptop INSIDE their car. I've done LP work for several retailers and I kid you not, an estimated average of $45,000+ in losses bi-annually IN EACH INDIVIDUAL STORE.

Just 1/3 of the money lost in these scams could be used for an off-duty armed cop for 8 hrs during high-traffic times, but only Best Buy has seemed to figure that out. Armed cops teamed with active LP officers significantly reduces these losses. Cops can pursue and have less chance of being sued when making an arrest. Also, cops have radios to spread the word when the criminals speed off in their vehicle with temp tags.

Ok this is better than forging Walmart receipts.
