I used to work only a couple miles from this area. Its very sad that this person tried to help someone else and it cost his life. What would you have done in this situation? Granted not much information is available in the article to paint a picture of the situation, but would you have intervened? I wont lie, stories like this make me less inclined to help someone. Stay alert out there.

Sounds like he didn't have a weapon. Also sounds like he may not have been aware that the bad guy was armed.

Sounds like a dangerous night in Houston. Not knowing the geography of Houston, how close was this incident to the first one posted?

That's a shame, my paper route was those apartments on Beechnut.
Mr. Akin used to own the gas station on the corner of 610/Beechnut there.

The neighborhood at Beechnut and 610 is one of the nicest in Houston - I imagine that's why the criminal choose the location.

There's a HPD subsection on Beechnut, about a mile from the scene of the purse snatching/murder. So much for the "they wouldn't rob me that close to a police station" line of thinking.

Very sad, a brave man paid with his life.

Even in states where guns are outlawed criminals are armed.

Yep, they got him...

Anthony Ray Ferrell, 39, has been charged with capital murder, among other
charges, and is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.

I use to work in the Meyerland shopping center. Many times I have stopped at that same gas station. I worked for one of the large retailers there so always had opportunities to talk to security. We heard about carjackings, muggings and robberies all the time in that area. Even a woman getting run over and killed by a thief last year. Working here is why I left and also one of the reasons I decided to get my CHL. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

Here are some examples of crime it that area...

"The gun just went off," said Ferrell. "It just happened. It was an accident."

Dunno. What's the deal with making up a name for yourself that's just "X"?

Real question - I didn't grow up round these parts and it's all a bit strange to me.
