Felons can keep guns at home after 5 years?

While reading updates on the A&M "gunman" story, I happened to notice this article on same web site ...

The last two paragraphs grabbed my attention becaue they seem contradictory what I understand of laws regarding felons and firearms. Since when can a felon possess a firearm in his residence?

Johnson was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon because he had a gun at a place other than his residence before the end of five years from his conviction, confinement or release. He had a felony conviction in 1996 for grand larceny, a felony conviction in 1998 for possession of a stolen vehicle, and another in 2000 for rape, all in the same county in New York, according to police records.
Unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon and tampering with evidence are third-degree felonies punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a fine up to $10,000. Aggravated assault is a second-degree felony punishable by up to 20 years behind bars and a fine up to $10,000.
