You're right. that was incredibly fast! Bad guys were less than 10 seconds in and out of the door.

Umm, no. He was protecting his life.

The officer quoted in the story got it right:

“He was clearly in fear of his life,” said Sgt. Scott Prince, a police detective.

If you notice, he grabs their shotgun and pulls it out of their hands as well.

This appears to be another example of how what seems like a solid robbery plan doesn't survive the first few seconds of contact with reality.

I can't make out exactly when the shotgun was fired from the video.

It looks to me like the shot may have been fired due to the victim's struggle for the gun while the bandit's finger was on the trigger.

This would make a fair amount of sense in that shooting the clerk as a BG's first action is not the best way to get away with money.

I hope you don't think the phrasing here was accidental. It's a deliberate attempt to delegitimatize an act of self-defense. That's one of the reasons it's the lead sentence, because it's known that most people only read the first paragraph of most articles, and it sets the tone. The media attack on the concept of self-defense has been relentless for as long as I can remember, and their primary technique is this kind of deliberate mischaracterization.
