I always assumed, but never verified, that this came from morgues storing bodies on/near ice in the days before modern refrigeration methods became available and economical.

Oooh. They found his body last wednesday, which would be 6 Oct. The power was shut off in August. Yeah, that would be a powerful smell, alright.. .
