In El Paso yesterday a man was shot and wounded when a fight erupted in a restaurant at 9 a.m. Several suspects are reported to be in custody. The location is reported as Gallegos Restaurant in the 9300 block of Dyer. This means nothing to me, but some of y'all know El Paso.

What I found noteworthy was the time of day.

I'm gonna go get me some huevos rancheros now.

I'm not familiar with El Paso either but I will agree that 0900 seems a little early to be shootin' people. OTOH, there's no time like the present, if they needed to be shot.

Maybe they were coming off the night shift.

This is what they like to call a "breaking news" story, and it sounds messy.

The El Paso newspaper sez that the victim walked into the restaurant with three other individuals and got into an argument with a group that was already there eating. The shooter shot the victim in the eye after which an off duty firefighter disarmed him by grabbing the gun. The shooter fled the place chased by some of the patrons. No reason for the argument given in the article. The bad thing (maybe) is the article indicated the shooter had a valid CHL.

Norma Hernandez said she had been sitting in her car with her husband when she heard a single gunshot. She had been getting ready to drop her husband off at Aarons Sales & Lease Ownership, 9220 Dyer, when the gunshot caught their attention, she said.

"We heard a pop, and that's when we got out of a car," she said.

Hernandez said she and her husband ran over to the street just in time to see a man in a yellow shirt leaning over the wounded 24-year-old.

Color me crazy, but if I heard a gunshot, I wouldn't be getting out of my car and running unprotected in the direction of it. I'd be driving away quickly in the car I'm already inside. What was she thinking?

What was she thinking?

The snappy answer is nothing (i.e., not thinking).

The smart thing to do is leave skid marks and call the cops from a safer location.

However, humans have a combination of empathy and curiosity that overrides pure rational judgment.

Wait a minute. Some off duty firefighter grabbed the chl guys gun?!!??! Are you kidding me. I am trying to figure out how that one happened. I wasnt there, obviously, but if some other guy is coming at me after I stop the first guy, he is getting shot as well. Of course, this is arm chair QB'ing. The level of adreneline and everything else going on, who knows what would have happened, but wow!

In the close quarters of a restaurant, "coming after you" may consist of simply reaching from contact distance.

Yes. I am a firefighter too, a vollie, and some joe blow being a firefighter would cut no ice with me if he was trying to take my gun after I was threatened with deadly force.

Now, one of the accounts says a "struggle ensued" after the shot, so if one of the bad guys had his hands on the gun, that changes the perspective a bit. (Also, excellent example of why a BUG or a knife -- or a BUG and a knife -- might be a good idea.

By 6:30 p.m. the restaurant was open again and customers said they will continue to go to El Gallegos.

"It's not going to stop me," said Mario Gutierrez, who planned on ordering a buffet meal. "Life goes on."

Well if it had been a justified shoot and the fireman had jumped and grabbed my gun he would have been shot too.

Sorry about that buddy, but in a situation like that, nobody except a uniformed LEO would disarm me.

P.S. I carry a BUG in my left pocket.

This is what I get putting the pieces together from the news stories.

A gang of criminals were assaulting people. At least one of the gang was armed with a shank.

One of the victims defended himself.

Some ninja-wannabe (or gang associate) attacked the victim. I hope he's charged with assault too.

And theft of a firearm.

One of the takeaways from this incident is that just because you are a CHL holder and consider yourself a GG does not mean you will be viewed that way by others as dangerous. When you use your weapon, there are no flashing signs that indicate you're a GG. For all the other witnesses know, you may be a BG, and they may treat you as such.
