Something to think about with a National Reciprocity bill. . . . .

For better or for worse, even if a bill like that passes, states are still allowed to set their own laws about things like magazine capacity. I'd love it if a reciprocity bill made it legal for me to carry whenever I visit family back in California, but they have a 10 round magazine capacity limit there, so I would still have to either carry one of my 10 round or less capacity guns, OR carry my regular carry guns with mags restricted to 10 rounds. My Glock 19 is legal to own in California, but only with 10 round mags. So just because you'll be able to carry a gun in a gun-unfriendly state, that doesn't mean that you'll be able to carry your regular carry piece in that state.

You are right. And NJ today would put you in jail over the possession of JHP ammo so there are a lot of aspects to consider with this. As we found with "fines for signs" and places like the Ft. Worth Zoo, those who wish to restrict concealed carry will go to ridiculous lengths to prevent it and I would expect National reciprocity to be no different. NY, NJ, MD, CT and other Progressive strongholds will find dozens of ways to try to stop us from carrying in their States. Hopefully, carefully crafted legislation could help us. California has unique restrictions on cars sold there but, driving through, I don't have to have my vehicle modified to meet them.

I certainly don't see National reciprocity as a singular fix. I am one who believes that the xenophobes will always have their panties in a twist over something. I would prefer to give them as many "somethings" as we can because, after a certain amount of wailing, their resistance starts to wear even those who are not directly affected. Heck yeah, if I ever go that way and you're in Tucson, I'd be happy to look you up. Usually though, we take I-40 instead of I-10. The distance is almost exactly the same .....within about 50 miles or so...... and it's a little bit more scenic.

US 287 > I-40 West in Amarillo > I-15 South in Barstow > I-210 West in Fontana > Pasadena.

The alternative is I-30 west > I-20 west > I-10 West in West Texas > CA-57 North in Pomona > 1-210 West in San Dimas > Pasadena.

What's your restriction for carry in California and the rest of the roadtrip under the current law?

I can't carry in California at all. But I still bring a gun for self defense.......even if it is just self defense in my hotel room. When we go out there next May, it will be "self defense in my travel trailer". I can have the Glock, as long as it is properly stored during travel (unloaded, locked in a container, out of my reach), but ONLY if the magazines are 10 rounds or less. I would have to buy 10 round California-legal mags, OR, bring another gun (I have several that qualify). If I were to ever be stopped and searched, the standard capacity mags would be an automatic "gun felony", and loss of my rights in Texas. Definitely not worth the risk.

As far as the rest of the trip, my carry license is good in Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona, so it wouldn't be an issue. Normally, I carry between here and the AZ/CA border. I stop in Kingman, AZ at the In N' Out, buy lunch, and disarm - locking the guns up in compliant locked cases. They stay in those cases until I cross back over the border into AZ. There's a rest stop on the eastbound side of I-40, about a mile or two after you cross the border. I pull over there, gun up, and go about the rest of my trip.
