The legend of how chicken wings got popular is when an Italian restaurant in Buffalo, NY got a delivery of chicken wings instead of their normal order. The restaurant owner's wife devised a way to "get rid of them" by frying them and then slathering them in butter and hot sauce and serving them as an appetizer.
