Santa Fe: Today's irresponsible gun owner

Early Wednesday morning a 14-year-old boy from Santa Fe (Galveston County) showed up at a hospital in Texas City with a gunshot wound.

The rest of this account is summarized from the Galveston County Daily News, reportedly, allegedly, according to a police spokesman, etc.

A 23-year-old Hispanic man was "playing with a pistol" in a home in Santa Fe Tuesday when he allegedly shot the boy. Police obtained video from an in-home surveillance system that showed the shooter tracking the victim before discharging the weapon.

The alleged shooter is charged with "injury to a child with intent to commit serious bodily injury" and was jailed on $151,000 bond.

Police are also considering charges against the victim's mother. She allegedly consulted an internet site about treatment for gunshot wounds. The victim arrived at the hospital approximately seven hours after the shooting.

This is now a worldwide story.

A couple of things to note here:

• When a home becomes a crime scene, the police can search it with the proverbial fine-tooth comb, including video recording devices and computers. No warrants are required.
• Not calling 911 is almost always a bad decision, compared to what might happen when you do call.

While the police can go in and secure the scene, it is common practice to have the occupant sign a release to allow the search or obtain a search warrant. If you don't, they can fight to have the evidence thrown out.

I don't know if the police got a warrant or permission in this case. Even if they didn't, the people involved are in it up to their eyeballs.

I just posted the following comment to that article at the HoChron:

Can somebody please tell me what a "high-caliber" bullet is? I've been around guns most of my 60 years, and I've never been able to figure that one out—because, if I'm going to be shot, I'd MUCH rather be shot by a .45 ACP than a .223 Remington or a .308 Winchester, both of which are smaller in caliber than a .45.

I suspect anti-gun bias and/or firearms ignorance on the part of a HoChron reporter. What are the odds? Personally, whenever I see/hear someone using the made-up term "high-caliber" (you'll NEVER hear anyone in the gun-world using that ridiculous, inaccurate, and inflated term), I automatically assume that they are fundamentally ignorant about firearms, firearm law, firearm safety, and firearm technology.

Mike Glenn and Dale Lezon, please Please PLEASE stop it. You're embarrassing yourselves. If you're ignorant about guns, that's OK. I'm ignorant about Mars landers. But if I'm going to presume to report on a Mars lander, I'll bone up on the technology and talk to some ACTUAL experts (not opinion holders) before doing so. BIG HINT: most big city police department bureaucrats are NOT experts, they're opinion holders. If you want the FACTS, talk to the people who manufacture, repair, and own firearms. Going to "opinion holders" for answers to firearms technology questions is like asking a vegan where the best steakhouse in town is. That's just dumb. To a vegan, ALL steaks are "high-caliber."

The mother of the year was arrested today and charged with injury to a child with intent to commit bodily injury, a third-degree felony. Her bond was set at $40,000.
