I sure hope that there is some solid evidence that the homeowners gun actually left it's holster, and not just that he was open carrying, to support an arrest. As noted, with the prevalance of smart phones, the "victims" likely both had audio and video recording devices that they could have used to gather evidence, if they were truly threatened at gun point..
I don't know what evidence led the police to charge the man as they did. Aggravated assault is a serious charge, just behind attempted murder in the penal code.

I can't imagine the first reaction of someone having a weapon pointed at them being to pull out a phone and photograph it. I would be diving for cover.

There might have been third-party witnesses.

Probably we'll never know. Most state cases result in plea bargains. There are dozens of criminal trials in progress in this county at any time, most of which the newspaper doesn't pay attention to.

This story is a good reminder not to confront illegal solicitors and other trespassers. Call 911 to report the prowlers and let the cops point their guns at the people who are where they're not supposed to be, doing things they're not supposed to do..

I agree. Scam artists are very quick to claim to be a victim, and they have a lot more practice talking to the police than the average homeowner.
