First of all, my condolences to the man's family.

I would be leery of meeting someone buying a firearm on craigslist or buying or selling anything else on craigslist, for that matter. The wife picked up several items off of craigslist this weekend. My M&P and I accompanied her to each one. You have no way of really knowing who you are meeting. The one thing you do know is that they know you are carrying cash.

I've been pondering offering a $20 "transfer service" to folks in the Austin area that might be nervous about these situations. Generally speaking, do folks here think that's a worthwhile service to offer? I know some folks are leery, but others might be comforted by the fact that they're selling a firearm to somebody that had to complete a 4473 and pass a background check.

It's against the TOS for Craigslist to sell guns or ammo using their site. If you read the posts there, you can tell by the wording that posters know this and are doing it anyway. Makes me leery to be involved with them in anyway. I don't think it would be wise to offer to be a go between for transactions from there.

If someone is willing to go through a FFL transfer and paperwork, they can often get a NIB gun from Bud's for less than used guns list on Texas Gun Trader, Craigslist, and many other online personal ads.

I have bought exactly three used guns in the last three years. All of them have been from members here.

I have only two Craigslist stories. The first, I travelled 45 miles to buy a manual 35 mm Nikon. He said that it has been recently repaired, but it didn't work, so I passed. My last experience and only purchase from Craigslist was spooky. It was a piece of furniture which I eventually tossed into a dumpster.

Smells fishy. It doesn't make any sense to shoot the guy you supposedly intend to rob then jump in your car and take off without even trying to get what you came to steal.
