Former HPD officer and current CHL murders Oral Surgeon
I am thinking that alcohol had some play in this. Not really a CHL issue as he was at a home, but it was mentioned.

I think it was at the deceased person's home ... where the retired officer/security guard was a guest, .....but true, not a CHL issue.ddurkof wrote:I am thinking that alcohol had some play in this. Not really a CHL issue as he was at a home, but it was mentioned.

Due to his actions, you can bet that's the last time Redding is invited there as a guest for a sleepover and fishing trip by the deceased guy ...Dr. Mark K. Holcomb.Redding walked out of the living room and grabbed .380-caliber pistol from his luggage, returned to the living room and shot Holcomb.
The man charged with Holcomb’s murder, Dennis Roy Redding, 63, of Cedar Creek, is a retired Houston police officer and former Johnson Space Center security officer,

Re: Former HPD officer and current CHL murders Oral Surgeon
There is something strange behind this story. A guy in his 60s just doesn't murder another guy in his 60s over some trivial argument.
The time of the incident, 12:30 a.m., does indicate that bad things happen more often after midnight.
Maybe it will come out at the trial, if there is a trial.

Maybe it was a lover's quarrel. Those have a lot of potential for violence.seamusTX wrote:There is something strange behind this story. A guy in his 60s just doesn't murder another guy in his 60s over some trivial argument.

The deceased doctor is married and has adult children and grandchildren. I don't know anything about the suspect that isn't in the paper.

The article indicated that there was "bad blood" between the two. It also said that there were some other people present. It should come out before the trial, but you never know.seamusTX wrote:There is something strange behind this story. Kennelly said police were unable to confirm what the two men were arguing about when the shooting happened.
“We may never know what led to the argument,” the chief said.

Here's another story with a few more details, but there still is no explanation of why the alleged murderer shot the victim:

BTW, the suspect already bonded out.

Is there not any concern that an "innocent until proven guilty" individual has been publically identified by sheriff as being a CHL holder?
Yes - plastic to be surrendered, but - public declaration?
As a newbie - I am requesting a better understanding of this process.

I don't know if there is a standard process. In some cases involving handguns they may post the CHL status to explain why the person was not charged with carrying a concealed weapon. Since CHL records are not supposed to be public, it's probably an unneccesary invasion of privacy.LSL wrote:Is there not any concern that an "innocent until proven guilty" individual has been publically identified by sheriff as being a CHL holder?

Re: Former HPD officer and current CHL murders Oral Surgeon
This particular suspect has much bigger problems.
No law prohibits the police or a newspaper stating that a person does or does not have a CHL. The only legal aspect is that DPS cannot reveal that fact except to law enforcement.
In this case the police chief explicitly stated it to the reporter.
From a practical point of view, the initial story in the newspaper or on TV comes from the police. The police report is a public record. Usually the police report contains the suspect's name, address, sex, race, age, occupation or employer, and other information that may or may not be relevant to the offense, such as the kind of vehicle he was driving, what he was wearing, etc.
"Innocent until proven guilty" does not mean that the suspect has to be treated with kid gloves. It is shorthand for the fact that in our legal system, the state must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the suspect is guilty.
That is contrasted with other legal systems (mainly civil law systems like the Code Napoleon), where the suspect must prove his innocence.
In reality, the suspect may be held in jail from the day of his arrest until the end of his trial (because he cannot make bail), brought to the courtroom in shackles, and subject to other indignities that a truly innocent man would not be subject to.

He was my wife and daughter's oral surgeon. He removed their wisdom teeth.

It still doesn't say what the original falling out was, though. The two men were part of a small gathering of people at the Harborwalk house when they got into a disagreement. Kennelly said his department’s initial investigation indicates that Redding walked out of the living room and grabbed .380-caliber pistol from his luggage, returned to the living room and shot Holcomb.
“Apparently, these two had been friends but had a falling out,” Kennelly said. “This weekend was supposed to be a way for them to get together and rekindle that friendship. They were supposed to be out fishing (Saturday).”
