But Republicans like Straus and Romney will tell you that it's safer when nurses and neurosurgeons are disarmed.

Is that to suggest that some Democrat is telling you they favor nurses and neurosurgeons being armed? If so, please tell me which ONE Democrat said that...'cause everyone knows even ONE would be a stretch. While there are some Republicans who are wishy-washy on firearms (I am ticked that campus carry was allowed to be defeated like that), the Republican Party, by and large, supports the Second Amendment, self-defense, and legal firearms use by the average citizen.
