Neighbors said Shank had recently dropped out of the University of Texas.
He played lacrosse at UT and Houston’s Kinkaid School, where he graduated in 2008. Classmates from Kinkaid describe him as a well-liked student who had a lot of friends.
Nancy Shank did charity work in Houston and was a regular at Bible study, according to a neighbor. She is also survived by her husband, Daniel, and their daughter, a freshman at UT.

Shank, a former University of Texas student, had been hospitalized at least twice this year for mental health issues, Roberts said.
Neighbors said Shank went to the elite Kinkaid School before attending UT. A Texas Lacrosse website identifies him as a midfielder on the team.
Doesn't really relate to firearms, but I found it sad.

Re: Former U.T. student charged with Murdering mother
Why is "former UT student" more relevant than lacrosse player, son of rich family from River Oaks, or mentally ill man?

Fear, anger, hatred, and greed. The devil's all-you-can-eat buffet.

But I've known several fairly mental persons from River Oaks, when I lived around there in the 70s, but the ones who go to U.T. seem to hit the news more where I live now ... (That's how it was on the news up here today)

I'm not criticizing you (much, anyway ); but I have never understood why some details of a news story are considered newsworthy and others are not.
I don't know what difference it would make if the suspect had dropped out of U.T. or Sam Houston Institute of Technology, or whether he lived "near" River Oaks or in the Third Ward.
It's like news stories where they absolutely have to identify someone with a profession, such as unemployed former dog walker.

The "suspect" in this case was found no guilty by reason of insanity yesterday.
He will be sent for further evaluation and possibly institutionalized—the article doesn't say, but I think dangerous psych cases go to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

It was called "sensationalism" back in the old days. Wording like that is an attention grabber for people who want to somehow identify with the incident/individual. While UT is big news, only a few of us are interested in events in/around Sam Houston Institue of Technology.seamusTX wrote:I'm not criticizing you (much, anyway ); but I have never understood why some details of a news story are considered newsworthy and others are not.
