ME: Protection order once again works as designed

#1

Post by seamusTX »

In Bangor, Maine, yesterday a court order for protection against domestic violence worked exactly as well as any piece of paper works.

I am quoting this newspaper story under fair use (I hope):
Amy Lake’s actions over the past year followed almost perfectly the advice given to thousands of domestic violence victims throughout Maine and beyond. When Steven Lake held his family at gunpoint one year ago, Amy Lake reported the incident to police and then filed for a protection from abuse order against him. She moved herself and the couple’s children, Coty and Monica, out of the family home in Wellington and into a rented house in Dexter. She requested and received around-the-clock patrols in her neighborhood from the Dexter Police Department. She told friends and co-workers about the situation and asked them to contact authorities if they noticed anything amiss.
The estranged husband killed his wife, their two children, and himself Monday. The police responded within minutes—too late to do anything but process the crime scene.

I sometimes wonder if these "by the book experts" that fail to at least raise the idea of owning and carrying a gun are doing these victims of domestic violence a grave diservice.

One thing I never will understand...how a parent kills their own children. That's horrible.

When do you not wonder?

A woman getting a protective order often seems to provide the "last straw" that pushes the lunatic into a violent rampage, as in this case.

Those who may have read a few of the messages that I have posted here in five years can recognize that I am not exactly an Archie Bunker anti-intellectual.

However, the community of people who try to deal with domestic violence, including social workers, psychologists, bona fide criminologists, and even police officers seem to think that these problems can be solved by paperwork, legal process, therapy, counseling, and mediation.

They refuse to admit that victims can take responsibility for their own safety by owning and learning to use a weapon and all the other skills that go with active self defense.

Possibly they are so repulsed by the violence that they see every day that they cannot admit that violence is ever an appropriate response to violence. You often see the same mindset among people who work in trauma centers (formerly called emergency rooms) and have to deal with the results of senseless criminal violence.

When I know? ;-)

Poor choice of words on my part but I agree with you wholeheartedly.

Neighbor Phil Kreider said local police officers had been checking on Amy Lake every day because she had a restraining order on her husband.
Sounds like the police did everything within their power to try and insure the victims' safety.

The bradyites look only at the gun that the perp used to commit two separate crimes against his family and the law or lack of ten that allowed him to get one.
See...? If we would let them ban ALL guns, he couldn't do this. NOT that if she had one and was able to use it....
I'll bet he was ordered to get counseling. I wonder how that went? Sorry...

Required reading for the Brady bunch must include "Root Cause Analysis for Dummies: You already know the answer. Don't let anything else confuse you".
