SE Houston Bar Owner Shoots and Kills Patron

Houston police reported that a bar owner and patron got into an altercation. The patron, Courtney Aiken, was asked to leave, but returned a short time later and rushed toward the bar owner. The bar owner, fearing that Aiken had another gun, fired at him, hitting him.

Courtney Aiken, 28 was taken to Ben Taub Hospital, where he later died. No charges have been filed.

It is interesting that the initial reports stated that a "business owner" got into an altercation with a patron. Later reports indicated that the business was a bar. The reports also stated that Aiken pulled a gun and was disarmed by other patrons. Later he returned and confronted the business owner, Johnnie Patterson, who shot him.

This sounds like a "no bill" to me. It also sounds like one should stay away from bars in SE Houston.

This post practically answers my question.... Can a property owner, of a 51%, carry concealed on that property? How about open carry? I'm guessing it's legal, but still curious.

Pretty clear. Read TPC 46.15(b)(7)

(b) Section 46.02 does not apply to a person who:[...]
(7) holds an alcoholic beverage permit or license or is an employee of a holder of an alcoholic beverage permit or license if the person is supervising the operation of the permitted or licensed premises; or

Looks like you can carry, open or concealed, with or without a license, long as they own or are employed by and "supervising" the operation of the bar at the time. But read it yourself, don't take my word for it.

IMO this is just another point in favor of allowing CHL holders to carry in bars (long as they aren't under the influence). The law sure didn't stop the perp here.

It probably happens, but I can't imagine why a bar owner would open carry. Maybe in one of those "Roadhouse" type places.

I do believe I'd patronize that bar. Unarmed, of course. :)
