Deputy Shot in RV Campground

Considering it was NYE in Ohio, this is truly a bizarre event. Not many recreational RV users will elect to stay in an RV in Ohio in December so it it likely that this particular park had long term residents who use RVs as homes.

The part of the article that I found disturbing was this quote

The sheriff said “many, many, many shots” were fired during the incident at the campground...

I've been concerned about having to use a gun in a campground to protect my family because of the paper thin walls of the surrounding RVs. I cannot imagine being around while an event like this was going on.

The deceased criminal "suspect" was a berserker.

After he shot the officer, the police perforated the RV like the proverbial Swiss cheese:

Such a waste of a pretty deputy. Apparently, no one knows why. This harkens me back to an earlier post questioning what goes on in anyone's mind.

Our modest 'lil RV is armed whether we're inside or out; however, you are quite correct in that it wouldn't provide much, if any, cover.

My heart goes out to the deputy's family. What a tragic, senseless loss. I guess there are a lot of facts about this situation, like the reason for the original gunshot the brought that deputy out to investigate or why the berserk guy ambushed her that will never be understood.

One of the things that I try to do is to examine all of the stories of shootings that are posted on this site and other locations to see what I can learn that would keep me and my family safer. It is bizarre events like this one that make me realize that 100% safety is not an achievable goal. The best that I can hope for is to reduce the odds somewhat.

I'm confident nothing in an RV would stop a rifle bullet except possibly the propane tank, and I really don't want to go there.

This sad story is told over and over: angry loner has a grudge against the world and decides to go down in flames. The only difference is the choice of initial victim. Some go after their families. Some go after innocent parties in a school or public place. Some go straight for the police.

Propane tanks don't stop rifle bullets well, and aren't prone to explode like they do in the movies. I've shot a few of various sizes, and a whole lot of the little ones.

I've seen shot-up propane tanks, but I don't know what caliber or load was used. It looks like a case where a rifle bullet would do better than a hollowpoint (which is what cops usually have in their handguns).

In any case, the tank is usually outside the RV and not large enough to use for cover even if it could withstand gunfire.
