None of us has all of the facts. You are correct that he may have a defense. However, my issue is that if he had the opportunity to get the weapon out of the truck/car, maybe he had the opportunity to just get in and lock the door. I was not there so it may not be the case.
Sad as this is it reinforces the fact that weapons, bars, and alcohol do not mix very well.
