Hey guys, I'm new here. I hope this isn't too off topic since it has to do with center fire rifles. Does anyone know of a range around the DFW area that allows FMJ and steel core ammo? Preferably one that also rents private lanes out to 100 yards? I moved here from California....I know, no need to say it ....and to my surprise, it's more difficult for me to shoot here without running into restrictions. In the Socialist Republic of California, my buddies and I were able to drive an hour and shoot on BLM land in the high desert without ammo restrictions or any kind of interference. There were also ranges within an hour that rented private 100-200 yard lanes, which you managed yourself, calling your own line breaks, setting up targets when you wanted, etc. You could even bring EZ-Ups and bbq grills and make a day of it with friends and not be bothered by anyone. I have been unable to find anything even remotely close to this in Texas. I know that it's because most land in Texas is privately owned but there has to be something within a reasonable driving distance. By the way, bash on California all you want, I'm not a native of that hole. I'm from Florida and my wife is Texas born and raised.

I used to shoot at Angeles Shooting Range up Little Tujunga Canyon, and on the BLM land along Mount Emma Road. Also, there were a couple of shooting areas up in the mountains off of the Angeles Forest Highway that I used to go to.....don't remember the names.

Anyway, I'm a member of Parker County Sportsmans Club, and they allow FMJ rifle ammo, but NOT any AP, which excludes the M855 green tip 5.56 ammo. It's about a 1:15 hr drive from where I live in Grapevine, but you have to be either a member, or guest of a member to shoot there.

Did you ever shoot at Burro Canyon? I loved that place. I live in Keller now so the place you're talking about might be worth checking out for me. Thanks for the info, man.

I used to shoot at Burro Canyon when it was still a fairly new range. I also used to shoot at the San Gabriel Valley Gun Club range in Duarte, at the mouth of Azusa Canyon. That was the very first range I ever shot a centerfire firearm at. But I lived in Pasadena, right near the Rose Bowl, and the Angeles Shooting Range at Little Tujunga Canyon was more convenient. It also had longer ranges available than Burro Canyon. When I shot Burro Canyon, the longest range they had available at the time was the steel plate hanging at 175 yards on the rifle range next to the office. There wasn't any shade there then either......just some folding cafeteria-style tables and folding metal chairs.

Only REAL men shot there! . I also used to do a lot of trout fishing with my son up the East Fork, beyond the entrance to Burro Canyon.
