Good outdoor ranges near North Austin/Round Rock?
I've got a friend in Round Rock that has professed an interest in learning to shoot. She wants to experience the whole shebang, rifles and handguns.
Any of you austin folk know of a nice female-friendly outdoor range that doesn't mind FMJ Rifle ammo in the area?

A few months back, I made inquiries on this forum as to where you can shoot in the Austin area. There seems to be fewer here than in most places. Depending on how far she wants to travel and whether indoor or outdoor ranges are her preference.
There is an indoor range in Pflugerville called Red's Indoor Range. It's good for pistol, with a 25 yard range where you can move the target back and forth on a motorized pulley system, and a 100 yd rifle range. I doubt there's an ability for shotgun there.
There's also the Austin Rifle Club (ARC) which is actually just outside of Manor, Tx. That takes a membership, which involves an orientation and an annual fee. It also requires a background check, but once you get all that out of the way, it's a good range with lots of places to shoot. If that interests her, they are having an open house on May 18th with lots of information about the range and offer the orientation after all the demonstrations. They allow FMJ for rifle and handgun as well. They host lots of matches as well, mostly silhouette and hi-power rifle. No IDPA yet.
Other than that, FMJ is not allowed.
For strictly hi-power rifle with no FMJ and handgun target practice, ther is Eagle Peak Range in Leander.
Not a great choice of ranges, but it's a start.

There's not much in the area that meets your specifications.
I go to New Braunfels for my shooting fix. The place is called Dietz Gun Shop & Range. It's not terribly large, but it doesn't get anywhere near full - especially during the week. There's a 12-lane 25yd pistol range and a 25/50/100/200yd rifle range - can't remember how many lanes, want to say something like 20-25. They have a shotgun lane for clays, as well. If you don't mind the hour drive each way, it's a good range. The folks that run the place are helpful and nice. As the name implies, they sell guns/ammo/accessories and do rentals as well.
It's outside, FMJ is fine, and they're open 7 days a week, 10am until dark.

Is her goal to learn target shooting or self defense? Target shooting is less problematic then defense when talking about ranges in Austin.nitrogen wrote:I've got a friend in Round Rock that has professed an interest in learning to shoot. But if she wants to learn self defense, there's not much to choose from since it seems the ranges don't allow drawing or moving...But there are options if defense is the goal.
I made an error in my last post, the open house at ARC is Saturday May 19.

ARC is the best place for rifles around Austin.nitrogen wrote:Thanks for the ideas. We'll probably check out Reds.
Her goal right now is just familliarity.
As for shotguns, Reds allows shotguns, but only slugs. Capitol City Trap and Skeet Club near 290 and Decker has skeet, trap, 5 stand, and a field course (you don't have to be a member to shoot there). Another option for shotgun is Eagle Peak, which has 5 stand and free manual throwers for your use.
Hmm ... I think I'm going to go by and check that out. What does a membership cost @ ARC.O6nop wrote:I made an error in my last post, the open house at ARC is Saturday May 19.

Currently, it's $75/year, but no cost after that. You can go anytime you want. They may be raising that soon. The orientation will tell you more, but a background check is required, which will be waived if you have a CHL, and a range safety test is conducted.KaProw wrote:Hmm ... More info on the Open house / public orientation - It will take place from 2pm - 5pm. I hope some of you potential members will show up!
I'm not exactly sure about the earlier part of the day from 9am - 2pm, it may be open to the public, too. I'll try to find more info if anyone's interested, or check the website out yourself. http://www.austinrifleclub.org
