I want to let everyone know about the opening to the public of our range. We are 18 miles south of ABIA on HWY 183. We are also less than 30 miles from San Marcos, Bastrop, Kyle, Buda and less than 45 miles from Manor. Currently offering handgun use only but will have rifle before the end of the summer. Please give some additional information about the range. Is it "Bullseye" style shooting, or are you allowed to practice defensive style?

For example, would a shooter be allowed to practice drawing from concealment and shooting? Would they be allowed to practice movement while shooting?

Are you planning on hosting any competitive shooting activities (IDPA, USPSA, etc.)?

Hope this works out well for you…it’s nice to see new ranges.

Due to the nature of whom all we train and allow use of the range to we do allow defense shooting, drawing from the holster, double, triple tap etc. What good is having a weapon/tool if you don't practice using it the way you would normally carry it.

This is exciting, a new shooting range nearby is always good news. I'll look forward to seeing what it offers, hopefully some good defense training. I'll tell my friends.

I'm excited to check this place out. Drawing from the concealed position is something I would love to work on. Lord knows you can't do it at Red's in Austin or Pflugerville.

That's really good news. I hear the liberals have been shutting down some ranges in that part of the state. It's good that people will have an inexpensive place to shoot.

Couldn't agree with you more, but many ranges don't see it that way...

Have you thought about hosting an Austin area Texas CHL Forum get together on a Sat or Sun? It may be a good way to get some folks to sign up as range members...

A friend and I went to this range today. It is as Matt said, we were able to draw and shoot on the move etc. However, there is only 1 shooting bay, so I'm not sure how the movement/drawing is going to work when multiple parties are there. Fortunately, for today there were only the 2 of us and at any one time only 1 person is shooting (or have a hot pistol for that matter).

Matt took the time out to show us around, mainly where things are and how to set up the targets. 2 ways to put up targets: using the prebuild target stands at the end of the bay; and using movable single target stands.

There is a nice building next to the single shooting bay with a store and a restroom. The range provides small barrels and carpets for props, target frames are available (although the backing cardboards were a bit over used). Unfortunately the target frames were just a bit too large for IDPA/IPSC targets (they were desined for CHL targets). Another issue we noticed was that the bay has a trailer on 1 side and a really low berm on the other; this means no shooting toward or near its sides. A few tables are available in the bay to put your stuff; although the ground is nice and dry. Parking is about 20 yards from the bay.

The bay is marked at 3, 5, 7, 10, 15, 25, 50 yards from the prebuilt target frames at the end of the bay, and it is covered with medium-sized (1" - 2") rocks. You must becareful when moving so that you don't trip over the rocks, especially when moving while holding a hot pistol or shooting.

We have had a lot of rain lately and this range seems to drain well (perhaps thanks to the rocks). The bay is in excellent condition and dry; I can see coming here to shoot when other ranges are muddy.

The shooting is unsupervised with no perceived restrictions. I'm not sure if Matt monitors the range or if he'll stop any unsafe practices. I don't think this is a good range for beginners because of the lack of an active RO. However, my friend and I had a great time running around and shooting; you just don't find ranges like this near Austin anymore.

We were there for about 3 hours. This is considered a long range visit for me for pistol shooting; however, we took turns and never had more than 1 gun loaded at any time. We practiced drawing, shooting while moving, turning draws, mag changes all under the timer.

The range reminds me of shooting at Mike Webb's old Texas Tactical range in Dripping Springs out side of matches. Except Iron Mike's had more bays and the bays allowed 180 degree shooting.

After the range mini "tour" we both decided to get a 1 year membership since this range offered the chance to do some practice not allowed elsewhere. Matt mentioned that he intends to expand the range in the future; I hope Matt's successful.

Woohoo! An Austin-area range! I've been driving out to Dietz in New Braunfels to get my fix. Once you put the rifle range in, I'll probably give it a look-see.
