Likely a silly question.

At my local range, there is a metal contraption which, I believe, is bolted to the deck. It has a roundish metal body and a mouth angling upward. I can only assume it would be to point a muzzle into in order to clear a malfunction? If this is the device's intended use, would it not be far less dangerous to aim down range and clear a weapon? It's probably a coffee maker or something and I'm a dork, but can anyone clue me in?

Thanks,

A cajun in a bar bet a yankee 5 dollars that there were 4 doors in that saloon
The Yankee thought *There's a front door and a behind door, that's only two* so he took the bet
The cajun explained
There's a front door and a behind door, that's two, hey bartender, what's your name?
"Isador"
Ok that's three
and that metal contraption over there, with the roundish metal body and a mouth angling upward, it's a cuspidor; that's four doors

The cajun explained

Actually, I have no idea what it is you are asking about, could be an umbrella stand, but I'd hesitate to drink from it just yet.

And, I wouldn't shoot into it.

That's why I love this place, info WITH lols. Yup, it's a trap like that one. When would you use it instead of clearing aimed down range though? Just seems like if there's a weapon, or operator, malfunctioning that safely pointed down range would be better than behind the line where others are standing. Plus, it really smarts on the shin.

They are often used in locations where there is no range handy, Police stations, or the entry area to Cabela's, for example. In a range, I guess it might be useful if all the lanes were in use. IDK.
