Shoot Smart in FW has Shield & XDs for rent!

Post by BritOnTour »

If there is anyone out there wanting to try a Shield or XDs before you buy, Shoot Smart in Fort Worth just announced that they have both pistols available for rental:

New Guns for Rent!

We have 3 brand new guns we want to showcase briefly. You'll love these new rental guns. Note, all three are part of our Premium rental fleet.

The first is the M&P Shield. This striker fired, 7 round, semi-auto is chambered in .40 S&W and is less than 1" wide across a 3.1" barrel.

The second is the Springfield XDs, chambered in .45ACP. This 5 round semi-automatic is incredibly small, but very easy to handle. With interchangeable grips and snag free sights, this is a must see carry option.

The Third is the Sig Sauer 1911 .22LR. This one is a 10round flat dark earth model with wood grips.

If you were closer, I'd take you up on it. I am trying to decide which one I prefer, the Shield or XDS. As difficult as they are to find, I think the deciding factor may be which ever one I find in the store first.

Might be worth the short drive to go check it out.
Really curious about the XDs.

Do I have to buy Shootsmart ammo through the gun I'm renting or can I bring my own?

As far as I know, ALL ranges require the purchase of commercial ammo for use in rented firearms. It's a liability issue. If you were to use your own ammo, and the gun were to "fail", you could claim the gun was faulty, where the actual problem was that you were using reloaded ammo, that you overcharged.

That's a really great range and store. The only problem with it—for me, anyway—is Hwy 1709 through Keller. The next most direct way I can get there from where I live in Grapevine without having to deal with that is to take Hwy 114 all the way to the 35W and go south from there.

I rented an XDs and they let me shoot my own ammo. I think the requirement is just that you use factory ammo. (Either that or I got away with one! )

Not a bad drive when done away from rush hour. . . plus, Hwy 170 from Trophy Club (off of 114) to I-35W (by Cabela's) is your friend!

Living out here and having in-laws in G-vine and parents in Bedford (I typically go 1709 to Davis / Precinct). . . I've grown very accustomed to both routes.

I loved it. Shot one box of ammo and decided right there that I wanted one. Searched for it all over and never found it in stock, but wifey managed to find one and surprised me with it for our anniversary!

The sights are good and the trigger is a typical XD trigger. Recoil is typical of subcompacts in a large caliber. One thing that I liked was that I never got the tingling/stinging "slap" that I feel with some other small guns. I guess it just fit my hand pretty well.

When I got mine, I took it out and put two boxes of target ammo through it and then shot 4 magazines of gold dots. After about 60-70 rounds I was definitely feeling it. By the time I got to the self defense ammo my hand was feeling pretty abused. I almost cringed before I pulled the trigger on that first hollowpoint  (It actually wasn't bad) By the time it was all over, I had a small blister on my right thumb from the slide.

So, it's not a "go to the range and shoot 200 rounds" gun... but it was plenty comfy for the first 50 rounds. IMO, that's plenty to keep proficient with it, considering that it really shoots a lot like its bigger brother that rides on my hip and gets plenty of range time.

I don't remember. It was either 13.50 or 20.00. (standard and "premium" rental prices) Can't hurt to call and ask 'em. The staff is really friendly.

I definitely recommend renting any subcompact before buying... when you're dealing with such a small firearm, it's going to have a bit of kick. My experience has been that some tiny guns that my buddies really like feel awful to me, and vice versa.

What's the difference? (And don't tell me $6.50! ;-) )
