A place near Houston for plinking?

Does it exist? I'm looking for a safe place near Houston (preferably east, southeast or south) that I can take my son out to just do some plinking with a .22 rifle. I'd like to just set up some cans, balloons, targets, etc., and have fun without the rigor of the range. When I was a kid, my family had land where I could do this... but no more. Any ideas or thoughts?
Thanks

I know you do not want the rigor of the range, but PSC is not your average range.
If you want to take a look at it, let me know, I can escort you in, you can bring a weapon or 2 or 3 or 4 and shoot a bit (only at Paper or Steel drop targets), but you do not have the same issues have you at a public range
Check out the video in the middle of the page at

Edited to add: PM me if you want to take a look in person

There is no public place around Houston where you can shoot without regulation. You would not want to go to one if it existed. It would be full of unsafe behavior and slobs dumping trash.
PSC is a great place and located right where you asked about.

PSC is a great place to shoot. In Harris County even if you found some unposted, accessible property you are required to have written permission from the land owner dated the date you are shooting. That's the way I understand the statute, anyway. Don't know about Galveston County. Bexar has the same stipulations Harris County does.

There is no public land in Galveston County where you can shoot except for hunting, and that is very limited.
Otherwise you could be looking at a criminal trespass or poaching charge.
I know a place where people shoot without permission and also dump trash, drink beer, and engage in immoral behavior. Every now and then the local cops bust it up. I am not going to say where it is.
Other than joining a club, you need to make a very good friend who has land in a rural area.

Can't go wrong with PSC, it is the best outdoor range around and the regulations are very sensible.

Note that it is against the rules to shoot balloons or cans at PSC. Stick with paper targets. Or use the steel plate rack there.

Balloons & PSC
You may use balloons as targets at PSC. Just attach them to the target backer board as you would a paper target and clean up your mess when you're done.
Greenwood has an area (or did have an area) set up to shoot tin cans or plastic bottles.
