Are there any ranges on the Ft Worth side of the Metro-mess that allow holster practice for CHL holders? What about Dallas?
I live in south of FTW in Burleson.

Well, after 3 days with lots of looks and no replies looks like my question got answered. We are out of luck over on the FTW side for a range where we can practice from a holster.

Pretty much. You have to be a member of a private range to have that liberty.

Your "next best thing" will be IDPA.

You might give Johnson County Club a try. They are in Alvarado just off of rt. 67. There might be a link to them on the Cross Timbers web site, http://www.ctidpa.com/

Thanks for the info, but not willing to drive 2 hours and over 100 miles to go shoot.

The problem there again is where do you practice to become proficent enough to compete in IDPA?

Well, I guess we know the limits you've placed on YOUR skills!! :smilelol5:

I went to TAC Pro once, which is about the same distance from here. They might be closer to you -- and you can draw there too. http://www.tacproshootingcenter.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

If I were retired I would be able to go on weekdays, but still working for a living. So that means only weekends, and I don't very many of those free since we are very involved in the Christian Motorcyclists Association. The wife and I go to Texas CQB in Burleson or Winchester Gallery in FTW or On Target in Wheatland(Whiskey Flats to locals) to shoot. Then we practice at home with unloaded weapons & snap caps drawing from the holster and firing. Better than nothing!

Thanks for the info they are a little closer, but still pretty far for just going in the evening after work.

No one joins IDPA as an expert. We all start at novice and go through the motions.

CTIDPA runs a new shooter's class to teach you the basics. Then on your first match, you're assigned a mentor to answer your 20 million questions, to explain what's going on and why, and to coach you through. Check out CTIDPA's website for more info.

Well, I don't really want to compete. I know my wife would definitely not. We both have our CHL, and just to improve our skills a bit to better our chances if we ever have to be in defensive situation. We travel quite a bit for CMA and sometimes we both are off in different direction on our bikes. We might do the new shooter class at least that would be step up from where we are now.

I shot my first year of IDPA using my carry gear and regular street clothes. I didn't get into the competitive side of it until the second year. That's when I went to a Kydex OWB holster, a pistol with a longer slide/barrel, etc. Occasionally, I'll still shoot a match with my carry gear. One of the guys there told me once that he never carries a gun he hasn't shot in 2-3 matches. It's the best place to test how you handle the gun under pressure. Not everyone in IDPA is in it for the trophies.

so, I am going to out myself as a nerd. When I saw this, I thought it meant "For The Win" Range Question.

"rlol"

I really need to get off my can and go to an IDPA match. There's a good one (from what I hear) up at Cedar Ridge in Bulverde with Texas Tactical. My 'newness' at it has been the biggest reason why I haven't gone. Maybe I can drag my brother-in-law with me so I can be green with someone I know...

martywj,

Feel free to contact CTIDPA. David runs the new shooter's class. Really nice guy. If you want, let me know which week you're showing up and I'll try to be there. Then you'll have someone you "know".
