Hey Yall,

Are there any good outdoor open carry ranges in Austin that will allow you to draw from your holster? I know about Austin rifle club but it seems like it takes a month before I can even go shoot there due to their membership process.

Im sick of going to Reds Indoor...its great and all...just cant get any realistic practice done there...only 1 shot per sec, no drawing from holster.

Im thinking about joining the Texas Tactical IDPA club here. Anyone in that? If so, how do ya like it?

I have been going to Eagle Peak in Cedar Park. Don't know about drawing regs but they do have the 1 sec rule. To be honest with you, I was out there in the middle of the day (when every one else is at work ) and they didn't bother me. Ranger master on Sats and Suns walks up and down saying "no double taps" when he hears something quick. But my midday shoot, that was my mission. I shot 300 "well placed rapid shots in succession" and nobody said a word. I even looked around to see if anyone was watching and shaking a finger at me.

Can't say anything about drawing though. Call them and ask them.

they allow draw-shoot drills as long it's done safely. they also allow rapid fire as long as all rounds impact target and berm. reasonable enough. the range is a bit of a hike (183 South, about 5mi this side of Lockhart). but for the above reasons, I'm willing to make the trip. I might be going tomorrow daytime. I can PM you if you'd like to meet up out there.

if you reload, you might want to read their FAQ with regards to brass collection. the rules now say brass on the ground (even if still hot from your gun) is property of the range. you can bring tarp/blanket/brass-catcher to retain brass. I reload, so this tacks on a bit of hassle factor for me. but, I'll live with it for the remainder of my membership.


as for Texas Tactical, I happen to shoot with them. good crew. if you are new to IDPA, they are very beginner friendly. the match schedule can be found at texastactical.net . there's one coming up this Sunday that I am hoping to be at. if you want to run a stage with your shotty, they usually leave a stage up after the match, replacing paper with steel plates. I run this shotgun stage when time permits and have learned alot.

We live in south Austin and go to Lone Star Gun Range frequently! It's worth the drive and the staff if very helpful and knowledgeable.

I am a member of lonestar as well. I specifically signed up there because I wanted to practice rapid fire and drawing from holster. It is about 25 miles south of austin (down 183) and WELL worth the half hour drive there.

Red's (south) isn't that bad but the enclosed concrete walls make it god-awful-loud shooting there. Plus no rapid fire or drawing from holster. I still occasionally go there but it is now mostly to zero rifles/optics.

One year membership at lonestar ($65/year plus one time $5 paperwork fee) is a steal. You can shoot as much as you want (range is open 7 days a week dawn to dusk). They forbid full auto (for non leo) and tracer rounds. Steel cased ammo (wolf etc) is OK. They recently added a rule that once your brass hits the ground its property of the range. You can use brass catchers or nets etc and keep your brass but you cannot pick brass from the ground.

You cant shoot from the holster at Eagle peak. they also get irritated if you walk around with a gun in a holster (open carry).
