Having never been to a public range, I've been researching the ranges within driving distance of me. One of these is Weber's Outdoors in Troy (http://webersguns.com/webers_outdoors.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;). My question is this....

They list their pistol range as 25 yards. Does that mean you have to shoot at 25 yards, or can you shoot at shorter ranges (such as the 3, 7, 15 yards on the CHL test)?

Also, is $15/hr a good rate?

Don't know much about the Troy area but in the Dallas area, you can typically expect to pay $10 for an all day shoot. Some require memberships e.g. Garland public range has a one time $10 (lifetime) membership fee and a $10/day fee to shoot. The pistol range does include intermediate range targets (most ranges I've used do).

The only stupid question is, "Is this thing loaded?"

Most ranges have one of two arrangements:

• You can place your target holder in various sets of holes at distances like 3, 7, 10, 15, and 25 yards. In that case, you have to reposition the target during a cease-fire.
• You send your target downrange on a cable, and you can put it anywhere you want.

I've never seen the cable setup at an outdoor range, so it is probably the first option.

$15 an hour or $30 a day is the most expensive that I have ever seen for an outdoor range in Texas.

I have seen outdoor ranges with all targets at one fixed distance. I have also seen outdoor ranges with target frames that can be manually moved. Some have holes for the target frames and others have frames that can be placed at any distance. I don't know the setup at Weber's but you can call and ask.

$15/hr sounds high to me where I live but it depends what other options you have in your area.

Thunder range on the Porter highway has a 25 yard outdoor pistol range with a manual pulley system for targets. The range fee is $9. Their address says Conroe but they are actually due east of The Woodlands.

From Houston go up 45 past The Woodlands and turn right at 242. Turn right on the FM that goes to Porter and yes, I forgot the highway number. It's a couple miles down on the left.

They also have a 300 yard rifle range.

It's my favorite public range.

i do like it better that Carters country. I can really concentrate and focus, at carters country, i got like four .357 mags goin off at the same time. Those things are beasts!!

Webbers is nice, and you get what you pay for. Family run with top notch accommodations. If you looking for cheaper, let me know.


I live in waco, and there are a few other options that I would use, only because they are closer.

But I know a place or 2 in temple.

Not to discredit Webbers, they are very good and friendly.

I live in Temple, and have shot at Webers many times, but usually on the skeet range. The only time I shot on the pistol range was when I took my CHL class back 4 years ago. At that time, we set out targets on the backstop and the shooting position moved, but we only have one shooter shooting at a time. I was told that the rifle range, which is 100 yards, has intermediate ranges available by moving your target to shorter distances, ie for sighting in at 25 meters w/ and assault rifle etc, but cannot confirm. That being said, I rarely shoot there because of the cost, not that I don't like the people/atmosphere, Todd is a great guy and knows me by my first name, and always comes up and strikes up a conversation when I'm at the range or in their shop in town. The simple fact is that I don't shoot my rifles enough, and I can shoot handguns in my dad's pasture for free. About the only reason I go to the range is to shoot skeet, or "flurries". A little off topic, but if any of you guys like shotgunning, and have never tried a round of flurries......do it, you'll be hooked. 30 birds in 60 seconds, from various different positions, and various different angles, some coming right at you even....it's a BLAST!
