I frequent it as well. Nice if you don't mind dodging cow pies. The range master (Austrian maybe?) got on my bad side one day for calling a cease fire too quickly, and trying to abide by their open bolt policy with cease fires, i started cycling the .22 out (Marlin with a tube magazine). He ran over and GRABS my rifle/hands (one of his overlapping onto the trigger area!) and says PLEASE SIR THEIR ARE PEOPLE DOWN RANGE (they had JUST started to come out from behind the benches...all 3 of them on a different section of the range). Tried to explain what I was doing and he sternly says to put the safety on and put my rifle down. Well that could have gone easier and had he just said that kindly and without man handling close to the trigger of a loaded rifle. No good deed goes un punished.

That said, still love and frequent the range. Just be sure to call and make sure they are open to the public as sometimes they have some sort of shooting match which is for members only. Hope I can run into a forum member sometime!

They also close during deer season, or they used to.

I like taking off on Monday or two and going then. They are closed, but if you are a member you just show up and shoot. I've had some real peaceful pistol sessions with no one else around.

By the way, it is NEW BRAUNFELS..no "S" between the N and the F. I grew up there over 50 years ago. The mark of a mullet is to mispronounce it. You get better service and discounts if you pronounce it correctly..

I grew up in New Braunfels and been to Dietz more times than I can count. My advice would be to go on a weekday, as the weekends tend to get really crowded.

I've always liked Howard's range. But now that I have a friend who lives in remote rural settings (and a fine earthen backstop), I now have a different range at my disposal.

Dietz used to be my regular range before Lone Star opened up in Lockhart. It's a good place, people are generally friendly there.

I have, however, had my share of less-than-desirable experiences with folks on the handgun range acting unsafe. :rules:

:iagree: Saw a hispanic man fire his pistol, to which nothing happened, AND HE LOOKS DOWN THE BARREL!!!! Talk about heart in your throat! Needless to say about 2 or 3 people spoke with him mere moments after that. Man had not a clue what he was doing, and his continued actiosn were less than safe so we mentioned it to the range master and left. If someone can't talk you through how not to shoot yourself or others around you, I don't want to be within shouting distance of that place when something goes bad.
