Do the private gun clubs have advantages over the public shooting ranges? I have only been to two different ranges, TargetMaster in Garland and Gibson's Outpost in Mesquite. Would it be worth my while to find a membership club either cost wise or in an upgrade to facilites?

They all have their pluses and minuses.
I belong to a private club. It's near my home. I can shoot any time of day. If I'm the only one there, I can do whatever I like (set up multiple targets, etc.). And it's cheap. However, it has limited facilities, and there's at least one loose cannon who makes me nervous.
Public ranges usually cost more, have better facilities, and are run by people who enforce compliance with the rules.

But, if you shoot a lot, a private range is generally cheaper in the long run. I belong to DPC. After one time charge of $200 and $150 per year, you shoot as much as you like for free. DPC is about 1/2 mile from my office so I go at lunch 2-3 times a week. Saved me a bunch of $$$

I vote for the private ranges.
I've been to many public ranges around Houston and didn't care too much for them, their cost and limited hours.
The one I belong to now is Bayou Rifles. It is open air no buildings but we do have an outhouse with running water.
Very often we are the only ways there.
Don't have to deal with some nitpicker running around giving people unsolicited advise or critisism

JRG - drive a few more miles down the road and visit the Terrel Rifle and Pistol Club. The TRPC is one of the finest private shooting facilities around the state, perhaps even the country. Once you've visited you'll understand what I mean.
They have great members along good instructors, and IDPA & Bulls Eye matches are scheduled every month. If you ever wished you had your own parcel of land, with all kinds of great ranges, a first class club house (they have two), and you could pretty much access it at any time; well you need to check it out. In addition they have class room training areas, kitchen and dining hall, men's and women's bathrooms by all the major ranges.
They're very selective on their memberships (if you have a CHL you will have no problem) and once you visit and talk to the members you'll appreciate that fact. For $125 per year you can't find a better bargain around for a facility like this. That's only $10 a month - like I said a real bargain.

I too am a member of DPC. As long as you shoot once a month or more the cost is reasonable. Throw in the freedom of membership and the benefit is much better too.

I had an email conversation with one of the directors? there a while back. He invited me out but I was unable to make it. I emailed him back and let him know ahead of time that I would not be coming. Fast forward a couple of months, I emailed again to see if I could still come out especially since at the time we were seriously thinking about moving to Terrell. I never heard back from him. I cannot think of his name for the life of me. I am a member of a private club near my house also (I believe it is the same as Seamus)
I prefer my private range to a public range. Nine times out of ten I have the range to myself, and can enjoy the freedom that brings. It is pretty primative, but is less than 5 minutes from my house and is great.
Some of the public ranges drive me crazy with their overbearing "range masters." I know they are necessary, but a few of them think they are God or something.
