Last weekend we went to Chama, New Mexico and got the chance to stop by the Whittington Range just south of Raton, New Mexico. It is about 350 miles from Lubbock but worth the drive if you are coming up this way. And, it is much cooler there! This is one impressive organization and range. To start with, they have a visitors center which includes a museum, library, and gift shop. Antelope were free ranging just outside the parking lot. Second, you check-in at the gate and register. Membership allows you to shoot free and they sell quality grade targets for 5 for a $1.00. Beats my range here. But, remember to take a stapler or pins to attached your target, since I brought neither and the used duck tape didn't do a very good job. Third, you drive to the range of your choice.
All I wanted to do was fire a few pistol rounds. The other ranges there which include a 1,000 yard rifle range ( need a ATV to drive down there) , several silhouette ranges for pistol and rifle, and a black powder range all backdropped against the beautiful mountain range scenery. It was late Sunday afternoon and I had the range to myself.
