Shooting Ranges in Killeen area?

#1

Post by {TEX}Hawaii 99 »

Just moved back to Texas after a 12 year stint away.. Can anyone recommend a good place to shoot (pistol, rifle, tactical shotgun) anywhere near Killeen? Are there any WMA or national forrest shooting ranges nearby?

Nothing real close to Killeen. There are a couple near FM138 and Hwy183--Stans and Astro. One in Gatesville--Ranger. IMO none of these are first rate facilities.

I understand there is a new range in Liberty Hill although I have not been there.

You can also join the Sportsman Club on Ft. Hood. Too many hoops to jump through for my taste.
No State shall convert a liberty into a privilege, license it, and charge a fee therefor. -- Murdock v. Pennsylvania
If the State converts a right into a privilege, the citizen can ignore the license and fee and engage in the right with impunity. -- Shuttleworth v. City of Birmingham

Yep Stan's and Astros on 183 and Pine Knob Zero on Post are about it, don't know about gaiteville never been there. If you're into Gun games the Copperas Cove Pistol Club has IDPA, Action Pistol and 3 Gun.

IDPA is the First Saturday of the month, Action Pistol is the Second, and 3 Gun is the last Saturday. No membership needed NRA is required but you can sign up for the minimum membership. 20.00 for members 25.00 for non.

It's always a great time. No egos everyone is courteous, sodas, food, clean latrines. Even the Bull is friendly. Loyd Leppo and his family really take care of us. Ran short on ammo last time I shot and Loyd lent me some with out even batting an eye. Lemme know if you need directions to the match. The 3 gun is this Saturday but if you want to shoot pistol only you can in what we call a topdog match.

Personally I shoot more there than I do at the range. I may goto the range about once every other month just to correct bad habits.

PM me your email and I can even send you the Match stages for this Saturday.

Here's the usual speil below. with times.
3-Gun Match round count is 42 birdshot, 44 rifle, 38 pistol. 5 stages

...or shoot 4 stages with the Top Dog pistol shooters. 102 rounds

No steel birdshot, magnum pistol loads, steel core, armor piercing, tracer, or incendiary ammunition are allowed.

Friday, 24 June Set up
0900 - Set up

Saturday, 25 June 3-Gun Match
0630 - Set up continues as required
0700 - Safety Officer Meeting - Later arrivals please volunteer when you arrive
0730 - Sign In
0745 - New Shooters' Orientation
0800 - Shooters' Meeting
0815 - Hammer Down

Match fees are $20 for CCPC members, $25 for non-members. Membership is only $15 per year (Proof of NRA Membership is required to join the CCPC, or you may join the NRA at the match.)

It's worth the drive down to Best of the West Range in Liberty Hill. First class facility, no bull, shoot to 1000yds on the rifle range, get a bay to yourself, $16/day. Nothing even comes close.
