Re: Spring Guns and Ammo
I am with you on that Russ. That is how I did it when shooting at SGA but just like my previous post reflected many people don't use common sense when at some of these ranges. I was at another range 6 months ago not SGA or Shiloh and there was a ceasefire. The range master gave the order to drop all mags and have all actions open with firearms pointing down range. As I started to back up from my stall I noticed the man next to me still had a mag in his gun pointed down range and the slide in battery. I told the gentlemen next to me that he needed to drop the mag and have his action open in a very polite manner. He looked at me like really? I don't think he even thought about it. I think he thought I was joking.
He didn't move so I went and got the range master and he asked the man why he did not do as told. His response was that the safety was on. The range master shook his head and looked at me. He dropped the mag and cleared the chamber. That’s right the guy had a round locked and loaded pointing down range where people were about to go walking out to. The range master explained the rules to him again and the gentlemen said he was sorry but you would think it was common sense.
Long story short I think moving guns from one place to another at a firing range is asking for trouble with inexperienced and careless shooters. It is just one more thing to confuse all the ADD people. I know 99% of all the shooters at these ranges are careful but there is that 1% that left common sense at home.
I can't count how many times I have seen shooters sweep their body or the body of the person next to them with loaded and unloaded weapons. The perfect place to witness this is Carter’s Country. If you stand back by the rifle racks in the pistol range section when it is really busy on a Saturday you will see someone do this at least once during your time there that day. The really sad thing is that nobody shooting notices it. Only someone behind them who is not shooting notices.

Re: Spring Guns and Ammo
Great post CC! I, too, agree that the more loaded weapons are moved around at the range, the greater the safety risk. I do like SG&A though. I've been there on a few occassions and shot there range twice. Cool, great ventalation, and super staff. The heck with it - like you - if I see someone handling a weapon unsafely, I make it my business to politely ask them to change their ways. I'm not concerned with hurt feelings. A few years ago at Carter's I saw a range master ask a couple of young men to leave as a result of their unsafe practices. And it didn't bother me one bit to be the guy that helped make that happen.
Glad I found this forum again folks. It's been a while!

SGA is the only place I shoot, I have never seen any safety issues while I was there. But I also try to keep to my self. I have heard their concerns with people on a few occasions where they then watch them closly. Something has always been said to the person they are watching.

Well, since I just went into contract today on a house about 5 miles west off Spring Cypress Rd, I have the feeling I'll get to know this range.

I'm equidistant to both Shiloh and SGA, with SGA being the range I prefer. In my experience, if you get there between 3:30 and 4:00 pm on any given day, you'll have the pistol range mostly to yourself. The staff is knowledgable and friendly and the owners are generally always around.
Their gunsmith, ( Tyler I believe is his name) is top notch. He and I got to talking about my Ruger SR9c and how I felt it was shooting left, even benched at 25, 15 and 7 yards respectively. He took a look at it and said my rear sight was off center-right. Enough not to notice just by looking at it, but enough to correct. He was done in 5 minutes, with no charge to boot! I then proceeded to put 100 rounds through it and POA was POI for me.
Their membership fee is pretty much in line with other ranges of their quality and I hope to be a customer for life.
Their pricing is a little on the high side, but I've heard that they're open to negotiation.
Anyway, there's my $.02

Most of the firearms I have looked at on pricing, they are one of the lowest, only 2 other places I have looked can match or beat by just a few bucks and not worth the extra gascajun2340 wrote:I'm equidistant to both Shiloh and SGA, with SGA being the range I prefer. Shot there Thurs. night at Aaron Rogers Thu night skills class. It was a good time. It was nice to be able to practice drawing and shooting, since most indoor ranges seem to have a problem with that.Jumping Frog wrote:Well, since I just went into contract today on a house about 5 miles west off Spring Cypress Rd, I have the feeling I'll get to know this range.

Agree 100% with this poster. I shoot there at least once per month sometimes more. Never had anything but a good time.Andrew wrote:SG&A clean, cool, well ventilated. Older staff are knowledgable and professional. Younger staff, on hand during busy periods, can help with range info and directions. Ranges are well lit, retrieval systems work, blast dampening works(your wife won't freak when the guy next to you lets go with his S&W 500), allows rifle calibers, good pricing on weapons and accessories. Can Get REALLY BUSY, like Disney Busy, on the weekends. Tues, Weds, Thurs, 1/2 price for seniors, ladies, vets respectively 10 to 5. I like Tues. and Thurs.! I'm disabled and they allow me to have a chair in my lane so I can easemyknees when my wife is shooting. 15.00 per hour, no limit on guns(2 trips to the car) 2 shooters can share a lane at no additional charge.
As for rules being lax, I don't see that. I've seen people spoken to based on firing too quickly and been told myself, that there is no drawing from the holster.

I really enjoy going to SGA. I lately have been trying to make it out there about once every 2 weeks or so. The also have a nice selection of rental guns that you can use to test out to see if you like them before making big purchases.

I was just at SGA today and will continue to go back. I took a friend along who is new to shooting handguns and he absolutely loved it. There were no problems that we saw or any safety issues. Friendly staff and very knowledgeable with questions my friend had on buying his first handgun. I would recommend SGA to anyone who wants to have a good experience shooting.

Re: Spring Guns and Ammo
Apothix, we may have bumped into each other. Congrats on taking the CHL class. Now the waiting game begins on your plastic. I was over on lane 1 on the other side from your class with a buddy of mine. That was his second time shooting a pistol.
I hope that it does not take as long to get your license as it did mine. I forgot to sign the fingerprint card and they had to send it back to me. It was 123 days from mail date to plastic in hand. Long time to wait. Double check everything before you send it in.

Re: Spring Guns and Ammo
I've been to both Shiloh and SGA. Since Shiloh invested in an AC upgrade, it's not hot anymore and the smoke is manageable. It gets a little thick when I'm giving a CHL shooting test but that's because you have everyone loosing a round or two at the same time. Usually, the shots on a line are staggered even when all the lanes are full and the HVAC can handle it. I notice because it sometimes causes me to lose my voice when I'm calling the test so I have to take care.
As a customer, I'm very pleased with Shiloh. The lighting is good, the temperature and air flow are good and the folks are top notch. I just "joined" up with the IDPA club that meets on Thursdays and that was a "blast". It was a bit crowded, but no one gave me any grief because I could never hear when my name was called. The full size passive Howard Leights that I use have a NRR of 30 and believe me, it's not an exaggeration. I make my living with my ears and not taking any chances. Don't worry guys, I will be back and ordered some Howard Leight electronic muffs and I've been advised that if I use them with plugs, it's perfect. I'm hoping they come in before this Thursday. But even if they don't, I'll be back and I'm bringing a good friend along with my 17 year old daughter.
I'm getting involved with a Venturing Scout crew that shoots out of SGA so I'll be going there much more often in the future. SGA has a nice area full of classrooms and having the extra space behind the shooting lanes works well when instructing new shooters such as the scouts we work with.
So far, I've only been there as a customer a couple times but both times were very enjoyable. The equipment works well, the lighting is good and the HVAC kept up with the 110+ temperature outside. for me it's not worth the extra 10 mile drive through stop lights so I'll still keep my main practice range at Shiloh but SGA is definitely top notch and if I lived closer, it would definately get the nod.
