Minimum age at American Shooting Center

#1

Post by Katygunnut »

I am planning to go shoting this weekend and to my surprise, my 10 year old daughter said that she would like to go with me. Does anyone know if American Shooting Center (George Bush Park in Houston) has a minimum age? I know that I have seen kids there before, but not sure how old they were. I'd love to have my daughter shoot my Ruger 10/22 a bit.

No minimum. They must be able to shoot safely while wearing eye and ear protection.

I remember when I was shooting at Wade's Indoor Range in Redmond, WA, about 5 years ago, there was a little girl, couldn't have been more than 5, standing on a footstool, shooting a pink Cricket. Her dad was standing right behind her and she was VERY attentive to his instructions. I specifically remember her absolutely BEAMING when her first shot nearly punched the bullseye (ok, a mere 15ft away :-). I reckon we'll see her on Top Shot in another 8 or so years

Thanks all!

I got her a BB gun last summer and she absolutely loves that. Can't wait to see her shooting the 22. I actually decided to go ahead and get her her own pink rifle.

Thanks for all the helpful info.

I got her a Rossi single shot .22 in pink on the 12th, and told her that I would take her shooting the next day after church if she had read the entire manual by then. Sure enough, she stayed up reading the thing all night, so we did a quick clean on the gun first thing in the morning, and then went to ASC around noon. She had an absolute blast, especially when she saw how many other kids were there. I counted 4 other kids around her age (less than 12 y/o), including 2 girls.

The staff at ASC was great, and they were really cool to my daughter, even commenting on how well she was shooting, etc. I went up to her room the next day and she has her target tacked up on the wall next to her bed.

There may be no minimum to shoot there if you are with somebody, but unless they changed their rules- you must be 21 to purchase/rent range fees. One day, we were meeting a friend there who was 18-20 (I don't remember) and was in the Army Reserves. They wouldn't allow him to purchase range fees by himself because he was under 21, and he had to wait until we got there to pay for the range fees. Oh, BTW- a year later he became a hero in action saving men in his unit which earned him a Purple Heart. It's a good thing you don't have to be 21 to defend our country. Bad thing is you can't practice at ASC without a grown up.
