Why does it seem like 1 in 4 gun ranges are full of jerks?
Because they are...?
Its like I say, I love Texas, I could have moved to any other place in the US, I choose Texas, but I dislike Half the population of Texas. No based on race or politics or anything silly like that

One of my favorite bumper stickers of yesteryear was spotted in south Florida in the late 80's: "If you {heart NY} try 95 North".

I'd say that's a good number since well over 25% of the general public is obnoxious.
And 75% of statistics are wrong.
But only 1/3rd of the time!At a 95% confidence level.
Statistics are like bikini swimsuits. What they reveal is interesting but what they conceal is critical.

I'm suprised nobody has mentioned the god complex employees of the bullet trap in Plano. One or two if thier guys are ok but for the most part they are as arrogant as our summer days are hot.
Though it's not a range whenever I have gun needs and I'm in that general area I much preffer dealing with the people at Gunmasters at Spring Creek Pkwy and Ave K just behind the Sams club. Those guys are
great!!! Super helpful, willing to smile and crack jokes with you and don't look at you like you ride the short bus if you ask them a simple question they fell is an ignorant one. Gunmasters gets a solid A+ in my book.

Why does it seem 1 in 4 gun ranges are full of jerks? I don't know that I'd say the stats are that low. Obviously not all range owners or range staff are bad but, as I've discussed with folks form time to time, our industry tends to attract people with pretty serious maturity issues and of course, our society in general tends to be too kind to call toro caca to someone's face when we probably should. One of the things I'd really like to do is build a lady friendly range. Call me crazy but, I think women will be one of the saviors of our industry and if you can make a facility that women enjoy, and make shooting an enjoyable experience for women, their boyfriends, husbands and sons will happily follow them.
When you take the time out of your day to beat someone, it has a much longer lasting effect on their demeanor than simply shooting or tazing them.

I guess my trips there have been more pleasant than you described.
I wasn't trying to be a wise guy, by the way. (Ok, maybe just a little ) Seriously, be careful. They let folks get away with some really unsafe stuff.
I am lucky enough to be able to use DFW range at times they are generally less crowded. At those times I don't see any unsafe gun handling. I do know however that most, if not all ranges, get more than a few people who really need to have a basic gun safety course. And range officers can't see everything!

One trip to the Bullet Hole in San Antonio will prove this statement. Full of wannabe 'gangstas' and kids thinking they are 'hard' with with their Jimenez "duece duece"...
I need to find me some 50+ year old gents to shoot with...

Age and Maturity do not always go hand in hand. I've seen my share of Young Fools and Old Fools in my short time in the shooting world. The first time I got muzzled swept was by an old guy.

That's not maturity or lack of. That's inexperience or lack of situational awareness. Chances are great that if you (in my case, a younger guy) took the time to explain and show them, they'd appreciate it. Try that with Eminem in the bay next to you...
I'm talking about the kids who act a fool at the range, thinking they are all tough and "cool" because they have a pistol. I've yet to see older folks like that...
