I also own a gun range in the Austin area. (Lone Star Gun Range) We have to draw the line somewhere with so many people hording ammo. If we do not have ammo we don't have public shooters, we can't hold classes and we go out of business. I understand the purchase a firearm you should be able to get some ammo on the day of the purchase. You should also always be able to purchase defense ammo if it is in stock. As far as FMJ...range ammo...target practice(somewhere else) no. If you aren't using it at our range during the current crises then why should we sell it. What most individuals don't understand is we have the SAME problem getting ammo. We can't get it any easier than you can and our lively hood depends on it. We currently have "some" ammo we will allow to leave the range due to our recent ability to get more in. Other ammo we won't to insure we have it for range use and another thing most of you have forgotten CLASSES. Many ranges teach both security officer classes and CHL classes. What happens when someone shows up for a class and couldn't get ammo at Wal-Mart and we sold it to a guy to "take" home and keep for a later date and no longer have it??? They don't get to qualify and we don't get the business. Just realize they decided to lose your sale and the profit from it on that box of ammo. Don't you think there might have been a bigger picture and bigger issue? We all want the income to live and survive. Thankfully we all are starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel at least for now. Safe shooting all!

The question, why said range, regardless of what range do charge 50% more than Walmart prices even when it is reload. Of course, said range will use the brass of the shooters and do reloads at 50% cost of fresh rounds. Basically, its 2x margin and 100% profits. I am not against make a buck or 2. However, one has to be reasonable.

Also, the entry is getting ridiculously high at said range, it is how much $18 or more per entry? at open ranges it is $10 or $15. Some other ranges (No RO) are $3 if you are kind enough to drop the fee in the box.

I have been shooting and teaching in the DFW Metroplex for years and have rarely seen prices higher than they are at The Bullet Trap.

They are consistantly, and I mean consistantly over priced in their guns AND ammo. To not sell someone ammo that isn't going to shoot at their range is a complete and total joke. I've spent my entire life working, shooting, and teaching at ranges all over the state, and I've never even heard of that! If you're shooting a rental, then sure....that's a simple liability issue. But a gun store not selling AMMO???!!!!

Their employees have always been very nice and helpful, but damn their prices aren't.

I try to shop locally too because I want to support local businesses, but I'm not gonna break the bank for a company that isn't even paying the smallest bit of attention to the very market that they're operating within.... :nono:
Thanks!

FYI, I was able to buy .380 rounds for home defense, just not target rounds which they reserve for range users. It makes perfect sense, and I would be irritated if I showed up to shoot at a range and was unable to have the option to purchase. My main target gun is 9MM and the Trap's prices were consistent with the other shops in the area.

I beg to differ. I purchased a Springfield XDM 9mm there earlier this year, after having made the trip to Bass Pro Shop only to find they were selling the same exact piece for $50 more. I also got a membership when I bought it, which knocked 10% off the price (making it about $100 cheaper than BPS) and now enjoy $8 range fees.

I buy my target ammo from Wal-Mart (aka :evil2: ), but have purchased all my Corbon defense rounds at Bullet Trap and found their prices inline with what I could order over the Internet with shipping.

I took my CHL class there in April 2009, and Dave Hammers (love the last name!) was absolutely awesome. Nobody else could have kept an entirely filled classroom up that long without being so passionate about his art.

My *only* complaint is the range is so hot during the summertime due to what seems to be an unairconditioned section of the facility. My ears actually sweat while wearing protection after 5 minutes.

Love the selection of firearms, though!

You're looking in the wrong places. You should never consider buying a gun at either place. I've never seen a single FFL working out of their home not be able to beat EITHER the Bullet Trap or certainly Bass Pro not to mention several of the popular and reputable pawn shops around town. Look around, lots of better deals out their other than the Bullet Trap and Bass Pro.
