Hays County commissioners have been discussing opening a public range since forever. Now they are considering a site in Buda that is already an informal range. Buda is about 20 miles south of Austin.

The City of Austin is participating in this venture. That seems unusual according to what I know about Austin.

Hays County: Proposed range in Buda
Fear, anger, hatred, and greed. The devil's all-you-can-eat buffet.
Re: Hays County: Proposed range in Buda
Buda is also where Cabela's is. Bet Cabela's is rooting for the range...

I would love to have a range in Buda. I'll have to look and see if there is any way I can get involved.

Re: Hays County: Proposed range in Buda
Buda definitely isn't Austin, Jim. I've met plenty of people who live there, and they're Texas folk, not Austin folk to be sure.
During my on-site work at client offices in Buda during my last job, many of the bosses' offices had hunting photos and taxidermy as the main decor. One client (an electrician) had a riot shotgun leaned in the corner. I heard from other coworkers that during an installation I wasn't part of, they'd forgotten their binoculars; The client pulled the bolt from a rifle and let them use the scope to sight the tower they were trying to hit with the wireless link.
A public range sounds like a neat idea. If it were anything like the Texas City municipal range, I'd be happy to go down there, if only for the skeet shooting.
The extent of the COA's involvement in the project is purely for the purposes of "conservation". I doubt the city has any interest in the range aspect of the project, other than it is a concession to put their hands in another "environmental" project. Knowing the city, there's probably some sort of federal/EPA recognition or credit that benefits the city financially or to curtail environmental penalties/restrictions (like ozone level stuff).

We were in Dripping Springs (Hays County) during the infamous Hurricane Rita evacuation in 2005, which is why I have a passing interest in the place. I agree, south of Austin is a different world from the city.

My family's still in Dripping Springs and I visit them often. We'd love there to be a range nearby. Red's (Oak Hill) just isn't what it used to be.
