Bass Pro always trigger locks all guns that you identify as ones you will shoot. Most of the time they ask for the number of magazines and rough ammo count. So don't feel like you were picked on.

Ok cool, sounds like Bass Pro and DPC are both good options for me. Thanks to all who posted/PMed!

Made our second trip to Quail Creek last Saturday. No problems and no safety transgressions were noted. My Wife and daughter and I all had a great time.

There was a group of about 6 20-22 year olds that did not all pay to shoot. They had a single monster pistol on the 25 yard and 50 yard range. The hand stamp that the extra shooters had were all mirror images. Brilliant. They were told to leave in a firm and quiet tone, which they did. No muss, no fuss.

I like this range, so far. The only changes I'd make as an owner (money being no object), would be more shade behind the shooting stands and better seating for people waiting/watching. I'd also like to see some netting or other divider to control ejected cases. They are spending some money to improve some things, like the footbridge over the gully.

I hope I never am subjected to the treatment others have commented about. If I am, as with any business, we will not return.

I finall found this post again to comment on it. When I first started getting into guns a few months ago, I was looking for a place to shoot before my CHL class.

Although there were some bad things to say about Quail Creek, me and a buddy of mine went there. I have been there again since that 1st time and both visits were what I would expect for going to a gun range.

The guys there worked me through the process. I walked in announce I was new, assumed there would be some "hold harmless" waiver stuff that I would need to sign, that I would need to go in with my gun unloaded and open for a quick look and then I would be out shooting.

As far as gun ranges go, it is standard fare. I guess I dont know what to expect. My gun is a basic gun, no silver or glitter on it, so I am not expecting to be pampered or anything (I am function over form). Everyone there was professional, yet good humored. Everyone had a "security" mindset, so I was happy with that. It is what I would expect from a firing range......

Funny story, on my second outing that, a young lady (teens) and her grandpa(assumed) and some of his friends lined up next to me. I was sighting my gun, so taking me sweet time. Anyway, the girl attempts to fire her gun and nothing happens. She asks her grandpa what the deal was. I look over at the perfect time to see a bullet BACKWARDS in the chamber. Apparantly, she loaded the entire clip backwards (bullets backwards, but clip loaded correctly). All I know is that when that happened, I stepped one step back from her.....that and I could tell where she was firing due to the dirt clods popping up right in front of the target "rlol"

I to have had a run in with the range nazi. The issue was I had a stapler that was of the straight type. He yelled at me to not to use this type that it would damage his boards. I told him I would not use it and that maybe he needs to get better boards. He said the ones they use are expensive enough. He thinks he is better than any one else and that he knows about guns more than any one on earth. I have seen him beraid people. The only way to show them is to not go there again. Which I will not do ever again.

They are good people with no competition. Easy to do as you please in such cases. But I have heard many complaints. I have never had any that I can recall, but have witnessed some of the same things I am reading here. Again, generally, very good people.

Good people don't act like jerks just because they have no local competition. If I wanted to be treated like that, I'd join the Marines and get mouthy with my DI in boot camp. Lo and behold, I am a civilian, and I can vote with my wallet. Elm Fork is a much nicer facility, and it is staffed by knowledgeable, professional, and friendly ROs. As it turns out, they are closer to me too; so now that they are back up and running again, I don't have to put up with jerks if I want to shoot my rifles.

Funny you mention they should go out of business. I have heard rumors for 18 months
that 2008 is their last year of operation. I think they are tired of the whole
range business.
Last spring, 1/2 mile south of the range, some lady sitting in her trailer at a Texas Motor speedway event was hit by a 50 cal round discharged from Quail Creek. FYI,the range does not point towards TMS.

It was the November race at Texas Motorspeedway, and the 50 was not fired at their range

I'm not sure why they're worried about a stapler when they are shot up all day long...

Makes no sense.

Cheers!

I've heard the stories on quail creek range and never had a problem until today. I've been a semi regular there for the past 2 years, i got my CHL there (which was a joke by the way). I'm a younger guy - 26 years old, relative to the old guys that work there.

I've witness the range officers being jerks before, but today they just lost ALL future business from myself and anyone else I convince not to go there. I go there with my .50AE Desert Eagle and my relatively new SLR-107FR AK. I specifically wanted to sight in both the front and rear since I finally got the tools. It was a tuesday afternoon so they are VERY VERY slow which you'd think would be nice.

Before I bash on this range officer that kicked me out today (i didn't get his name but he was LARGE, had glasses and a beard) there is only ONE cool range officer there, and everytime he was running the show I had a great time there, he never came over and berated people for their style of shooting, we even talked a little shop because he also had a Magnum Research firearm, he' gave friendly pointers to myself and others there as well.

I shot 50 rounds thru my .50AE without incident - I was the only one on the pistol range at the time. I wanted to start on the 25 yeard rifle range, but since they redid the place they don't have shell catchers in place and I didn't want to throw shells all over the people to the right. So I moved over to the 50 yard so i could begin the sighting process (I asked him if it was okay before I went). I finally get setup, and squeeze off a few rounds and I hear the officer behind me going thru my things behind me. he found a magazine of FMJ 7.62 ammo and freaked out and told me I had to leave. What teed me off was the fact that he just decided to go rifle thru my personal things. AND what made me fuming mad was after I had packed up everything, I was waiting for a cease fire so I could go get my sight target just to see where i stand initially. So I wait and I wait... and wait some more (keep in mind im the only one on the pistol range at this point) to where I know this guy was just power tripping and making "the kid" wait.

-FINALLY- I go get my target and come back to the bench where everything is already unloaded, packed up and locked away in my gun case, I go to pick it up and leave and this guy yells at me to stop and says I can't move my gun when they are under a cease fire. -WHAT-?? A gun that is unloaded, put away in a case and locked up? I can understand that I can't run around with a gun in my hand waiting to shoot under cease fire but this is me trying to LEAVE after being kicked off. You can imagine how mad I was that I just paid 15 dollars and was only there for about 20 minutes before I'm told to leave, I try to leave and suddenly I can't touch my own darn gun case?

I'm venting yes - and I will be writing a strongly worded email to them later this week. I doubt they will check it, read it, or anything useful. They have lost my business forever because of this. Which is a shame because I'm in Keller only about 15 minutes from this range. I even got my CHL there in August 08(which im still waiting for and here its' near Feb 09. I don't know how you guys' classes were but this one was a joke, there were women in there that didn't know how to load a magazine for the field test. There were people in the class that obviously just wanted a gun to go and hurt someone with the questions they were asking. There were people going off the paper targets at 5 yards - and somehow they all passed. Much like this country - the priorities of this place are way off base.

Quail creek - I will never drop another dime there again. Now I need to find some place to sight in my AK on a 25/50/100 yard range.

toxin440, welcome to the board. Your experience sounds even worse than mine was, but given the way I was treated, I'm not surprised at how you were treated. I've had pretty good luck at Elm Fork in Dallas, and Alpine just south of Ft. Worth. If you AK has a scope on it, you can get on paper at 50 yards at Elm Fork and then move over to 100 yards. I like that range a lot. Without a scope, you can zero at 35 yards in the tactical bay. I don't know much about 7.62x39 ballistics, but with an AR in .223/5.56, that will give you a battlefield zero of 35 and 350 yards. Alpine is OK for rifles too, but for me (in Grapevine), it's just a bit too far away to bother with most times.

thanks for the welcome.

I was sighting in the iron sights - I'm on the paper at 50 yards... so no real worries at this point in time. I will check out the places you mentioned, would be nice to find a place i can shoot 7.62 FMJ's.

Been doing lots of reading here the past 2 hours, i love this forum! :)
