Re: Elm Fork Shooting Range
Elm Fork has been around for years. As a teen in the '70's, my father took me shooting there often. He taught security guard classes on weekends.age_ranger wrote:http://www.elmfork.com/

The man who ran the place, Charlie Reed, was a great guy. He was stern about safety and was a gruff old man, but he had a heart of gold.
When Charlie died, his son Dennis took over. Lets just say that the place developed a bad reputation for a while, especially among the black rifle shooters.
Dennis recently passed away, and his widow is now running things. She is working hard to improve the image of the place, and she is very black rifle friendly.
If you need a one hundred yard rifle range I recommend it.
There is also a nice shotgun range with Skeet and trap on the other side of Elm Fork; although, it is owned by somene else.
Did this Charlie Reed ever move to Wood County, Texas that you know of?

I wasn't at last nights match but I shoot 1-2 IDPA matches a month at Elm Fork.
The matches are run by DAPS (dallas action pistol shooters) http://www.dallaspistol.com
There are a lot of improvements in progress at Elm Fork. More berms, and enough bays to have more than one match at a time. With the closing of Colin County Gun Range, DAPS is stepping up by holding more matches per month to take up the slack.
There are also USPSA matches held a couple times a month for those that shoot it.
I didn't know that the owner had passed away. His widow seems to be doing a fine job as far as I can tell though.

I am scared of empty guns and keep mine loaded at all times. The family knows the guns are loaded and treats them with respect. Loaded guns cause few accidents; empty guns kill people every year. -Elmer Keith. 1961

Re: its under water
there is no telling. From what HighVelocity told me. The Core Of enginers keep opening the flood gates from due to Lake Lewisville being 20ft high. In doing that it puts Elm Fork underwater. So its going to have to stop raining for while before it can open again.mwadibe wrote:too bad elm fork is under water right now from all this rain. anyone have an idead when it will be back open?

Well ... there may be a little more awa on the way downstream. Lewisville Lake had backed up to the point that the road (Copper Canyon) between our range and SW Denton has been closed for weeks (under water near Old Alton Bridge).
I drove up to the Corps land that it crosses around noon today. It is now open again - but the area looks like mosquito heaven!

New info. Denise, who owned the range, sold it to the people who do the shotgun side.mwadibe wrote:they have said that the range will open this month does anyone have any idea on how soon it will open
They are completely rebuilding. They are going to have steel plates, a shoot house and all kinds of cool stuff.
I have not heard their anticipated opening date, but I imagine it will be worth the wait.
