Re: University of Houston - Releases Draft Campus Carry Policy

Here's the news story that ran in our paper. It's actually written mostly in the middle (slightly surprised): http://thedailycougar.com/2016/08/01/ca ... need-know/

Re: University of Houston - Releases Draft Campus Carry Policy

I haven't fully walked around to see which buildings are completely off limits, but majority of the rooms you see listed are laboratories or lab classrooms. We knew this was going to happen.

For example, I'm currently attending Anatomy 2 Lab in the Science Teaching Laboratory Building and although there are obvious signs up on each classroom door, I am allowed to walk in and through that building. The building and the restrooms are not off limits. The good news here is they are not making us walk all the way around buildings.

As for the residences, (from the Daily Cougar) UH won’t allow guns in any residence halls except Calhoun Lofts (with some exceptions in Cougar Village I and II). This is different in comparison to other universities: Texas A&M University plans to allow concealed handguns in all residence halls, University of Texas at Austin will only allow concealed carry in what’s typically called “married student housing.”

Re: University of Houston - Releases Draft Campus Carry Policy

7 pages of off-limits locations is a minimum?
I see what you did. You missed my instructions to scroll to the right. The list is of all university spaces. You have to scroll to the right to see which ones are off limits.

They held pretty true to Labs and Children.

Re: University of Houston - Releases Draft Campus Carry Policy

That sucks for A&M. University of Houston had Tilman on their side I guess. Our limitations are minimal.

Re: University of Houston - Releases Draft Campus Carry Policy

We got our Student and Staff Letter today from the UH Police Chief; Campus Carry starts Monday. I've attached a copy for your enjoyment.

We are in summer session now, so the impact to the fetal-position whiners should be minimal.

Here is a current link to the Off-Limits locations (remember to scroll all the way to the right). I think UH did a great job keeping the off-limits locations to a minimum.

Re: University of Houston - Releases Draft Campus Carry Policy

As a full-time student, I will still comply with this improper sign. It's not the same as at a retail store where if you "print" management asks you to leave.

I'm pursuing a degree in my 50s using my military benefits, there is no way I am going to fight this battle. For me, it would mean all sorts of administrative issues, including expulsion, etc.

Now, if I were a parent I might treat it like I do when I go to the movies, etc. (march sharply and "smuggly" by such signs with my nose in the air).

It comes down to the old adage: "Would you rather be right, or would you rather be happy."

Here is an up close look at we are up against in the world of academia. I post as "Charles" at the bottom of this guest Op-Ed.

Enjoy the posts of "Gun Free UH."

Re: University of Houston - Releases Draft Campus Carry Policy

I would be quite happy to file suit against UH on August 2, 2016 if they put anything remotely close to this into practice on August 1, 2016.
I find great comfort knowing you have filing suit as one of the solutions.

I posted this before I read it page by page. When I got the section where where they were claiming exemptions for practically every building on campus I couldn't help but laugh and cry (I'm a full time student who rides Metro through the 3rd Ward).

Charles ... thank you for putting/keeping this on your priority list. My fiancé is a 2L at UH Law Center right now. She just picked up a spring/summer clerkship with an older corporate immigration firm. Last year she interned with Fort Bend DA, and with the Honorable Judge Mike Engelhart (151st Civil).

For those of you who have an interest or investment in this cause (or University of Houston) remember the date: March 9 - 3 to 5pm. We could sure your voice and support at these meetings. In the past they either have a floating microphone, or two stationary microphones. They are opened minded with speaking time until some bed-wetting professor gets out of his/her fetal position to hog the mic or risks destroying it with tears. :grumble

University of Houston - Releases Draft Campus Carry Policy

For those of you following at home, this is the first commit to paper. There's been a lot of talk, rumor and innuendo up till now. Of course, Draft Versions are written pencil. But, at least we have our first "real" red meat to chew on.

http://www.uh.edu/police/campus-carry/C ... 1.2016.pdf

Here are the words from the source email:

The 15-member Campus Carry Work Group at the University of Houston is releasing its draft policy. The policy was developed to comply with Senate Bill No. 11 (S.B. 11), also known as the "campus carry" law, and follows months of discussion and deliberation. Campus community members, including students, faculty and staff, were invited to share their input prior to the policy development through several open forums, a campus-wide survey, and emailed comments at campuscarry@uh.edu.

SB11 allows individuals licensed to carry concealed handguns to "carry a concealed handgun on or about the license holder’s person while the license holder is on the campus of an institution of higher education" and

Authorizes the president to establish reasonable rules, regulations, or other provisions regarding the carrying of concealed handguns by license holders on campus; Limits authority such that the president or officer may not establish provisions that generally prohibit or have the effect of generally prohibiting license holders from carrying concealed handguns on the campus of the institution; Allows for broad input from students, faculty, and staff; and Requires an implementation deadline of August 1, 2016.

The draft policy must also:

Respect the unique nature of our campus which includes classrooms, dormitories, laboratories, athletic facilities, grade school classrooms, day care facilities, medical and psychological clinics, and multiple public auditoriums among many of our 157 buildings; Recognize the concerns of many, including our Faculty Senate which passed a resolution in opposition on December 21, 2015; and Recognize the need for appropriate storage so that license holders can safely store their firearms when necessary.

The draft policy can be found here. (See Link I posted above)

The Campus Carry Work Group will hold an Open Forum on Wednesday, March 9, 2016 at 3-5 p.m. in the Student Center Theatre, as well as at UH Sugar Land on Thursday, March 10, 2016 at 3-5 p.m. in Room 103B of Brazos Hall Building. These forums are open to the campus community.

Comments are due to the Campus Carry Work Group by March 21, 2016 and these should be sent to campuscarry@uh.edu.
