I carried a knife to most of my classes every day. The way I looked at it was a knife is a tool used to cut things, be it rope, plastic, boxes or bgs. To date the only person I have cut has been myself, on accident. A university is not going to care if you carry a pocket knife, if you walk in with a sword they might object but a pocket knife no. If you are living in a dorm then you might want to check the dorm rules because they can be more strict. If you don't advertise it no one will care, if you pull it out willy nilly for no reason and start messing with it in class like a crazed lunatic then yah someone will care.
