Re: Whichgun.com

The shotguns section is now active, with all currently-produced Mossberg models in the database. I'm working on adding Remington shotguns now, after which I'll work on other shotgun manufacturers (Benelli, Ruger, Beretta, etc.).

Re: Whichgun.com

I am happy to inform all of you that I have activated the Shotguns section of WhichGun.com over the weekend. A total of 132 variations of the Mossberg 500, 505, 510, 535, 835, 930, 935 and SA-20 shotguns have been added to the database. This brings the current total number of firearms on WhichGun.com as of May 15th, 2011 up to 1,284.

The remaining Mossberg shotguns, and shotguns from other manufacturers (Remington, Browning, Benelli, Ruger, etc.) will be added soon. Next up after this will be activating the Rifles section. I add firearms to the site daily; you can check my progress at http://www.whichgun.com/firearms_added" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.

Lots more things are planned, so please stop by often to see what I've added. Any major new features or content will be announced here as well.

Re: Whichgun.com

I've just added the ability to filter by trigger type (DA/SA, DAO, etc.). This should make it even easier to narrow down your search.

Re: Whichgun.com

Well, it took a lot more work to update the filtering system than I first thought, but it is done. You can now make multiple selections for each filtering option via checkboxes. I've also added a way to change the number of results per page from the default of 20 per page -- there is a dropdown to select 10, 20, 50, or 100 firearms per page.

Since I had to rip out and rewrite quite a bit of code to get this working, some bugs are probably present. If you notice any problems -- whether you receive an actual error message or something just doesn't work the way you'd expect, please let me know about it.

Sample: All subcompact or pocket pistols, manufactured by Kahr, Kel-Tec, Ruger, or Taurus, chambered for .380 ACP or 9x19mm.

Was the problem a huge white are in the center of a firearm detail page like http://www.whichgun.com/firearms/pistol ... ger-sr1911? If so, I think the problem was some settings on the commenting system I'm using (Disqus) that caused this. Give it another shot and let me know what happens.

I have no way of testing the site on an iPad. I'm on a Mac and tested in Safari, and it was my understanding that Safari on the iPad used the same rendering engine as the Mac OS X version of Safari.

If you could provide some screenshots on your iPad, it would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Whichgun.com

A very good suggestion was made to me in order to improve the site -- allow multiple selections per filtering option. If you go to B&H Photo's page for DSLR camera shopping, on the left you can select multiple manufacturers, megapixel counts, LCD screen sizes, and so forth.

On WhichGun.com, a similar system will allow you to, for example, easily find all compact and subcompact pistols manufactured by Ruger or Kel-Tec and chambered for .380 ACP or 9mm. With these filter criteria, you would be presented with the Ruger LC9, Ruger LCP, Ruger SR9c, Kel-Tec P-11, Kel-Tec P-3AT, and Kel-Tec PF-9.

This would obviously be a much more powerful system for discovering which firearms fit your requirements.

I've already started rewriting some of the code and have made some progress towards making this feature available. If all goes well, this 'super enhanced' filtering system will be live by the end of this week. After that, I can start working on the side-by-side comparison feature (I think it is more important to let people search and filter the results based on their requirements first).

If anyone has any additional comments or suggestions, or if you have found an error or bug, please let me know about it.

Hoi Polloi wrote:It would be nice to see SAs and revolvers lined up by CCW factor instead of being in two distinct databases.

It would also be nice to filter by the sorting criteria (CCW factor, rating, price). Then you could search for something with a high CCW Factor, 4 or above on rating (or unrated), and in the price range of $0-500 and have all the SAs and revolvers that meet that criteria come back.
All noted. Thanks for the suggestions.

Re: Whichgun.com

The enhanced filtering/sorting feature is now live. Any filtering option you select will remain until you remove it. If you click on 'Subcompact' pistols, then 'SIG Sauer' pistols, then '.380 ACP' pistols, you will only see all subcompact .380 ACP SIG Sauer pistols. You can remove each filtering option individually using the 'remove filter' links, or can remove all filtering options at once using the 'remove all filters' links at the top of the left column.

If you find any bugs or glitches, or have any other comments or suggestions, please let me know.

I used to collect "the smallest gun in each caliber"
A holstered Seecamp in a front pocket is darn near invisible; that would be my "College gun" if campus carry is decriminalized and school policy written to expel Licensees who "LEGALLY carry where a school rule prohibits it." (It's my back up gun now) I know at least 1 moderator here is familiar with Seecamp, as well as some members.

On my to-do list, thanks for the suggestion. I'm not sure why Seecamp pistols are not already in the database -- I contacted them a while back to obtain permission to use photos of their guns on my site, which they granted. Must have just fell through the cracks.

Re: Whichgun.com

I've just finished rewriting the filtering and sorting code this evening. It still needs to be properly tested, but I think I've got it, and it should be added to the live site tomorrow. This will allow multiple filtering options, so you can easily find all full-size 9mm Smith & Wesson pistols, all compact .45 ACP Kimber pistols, and so forth. The URL's are going to look like '/firearms/pistols/type:full-size/manufacturer:smith-wesson/caliber:9x19mm', '/firearms/pistols/type:compact/manufacturer:kimber/caliber:45-acp', etc.

I'll post again once this enhancement is live. It will make it so much easier to narrow down your search or find a particular gun.

Thomas wrote:Hmm... You can't "stack" filters. For example, I just want to see all Subcompact Sig Sauer Semi-Automatic Pistols. How do I do that? I can't click on Subcompact and then SIG Sauer, because then it will just show all SIG Sauer regardless of size.
Right now you can't, but this is something that is definitely on my to-do list. Once I finish the revolvers, rifles, and shotguns sections, and get a few articles posted, I'll be working on an improved filter/search feature.

Re: Whichgun.com

Hi JJVP, thank you for posting this. WhichGun.com is a personal project of mine (I'm a web programmer and database administrator) that I just launched on April 15th. I'm glad you enjoyed the site, and hope you and others find it useful.
