Re: Ride-A-Long Introduced me to Fine Handguns!

Naw, the guy who drove it was in realstate of some sort. He was actually a nice fella-I wanted to be his best friend.

Re: Ride-A-Long Introduced me to Fine Handguns!

Alright, fine. It was a tiny hole... All that talk about how big of holes .45 ACP makes is rubbish.... it wasn't any bigger than the hole I made in another car floor with a 9mm.

Re: Ride-A-Long Introduced me to Fine Handguns!

I'm not sure where I should begin, so I'll just ramble in my defense.

"Service does not equal Saint Hood?" Nice. I do appreciate TAM coming to my defense, but I dont think that is what he was trying to get across. I never claimed to be a saint, and It would be foolish for anyone else to think so. However, I have extensive experience with handguns, long guns, explosives--whatever. I know my way around a handgun, and the chances me being the "unfortunate curious cat" are about as slim as can be. Since we are apparently in the business of burning eachother in this forum, I can assure you I am perfectly capable of taking your handgun from you, unloading it, examine it thoroughly, and then assisting you with inserting your foot in your mouth without a single ND\AD. Then again, sometimes bad things happen I suppose.

Your children exhibit more maturity and responsibility? I have no doubt you have raised them well, but if you are implying that I am irresponsible and immature--Your wrong, sir. Assuming I am any of the above for "fondling" a handgun that was given to me to look at during a routine traffic stop is a little premature, wouldn't you think. I ask that you keep an open mind, assume that you (or most of the people on this forum) would have done the same exact thing I did. Also keep in mind that I did nothing wrong, except for a few other individuals on here I think most would agree. If it was in any way criminal, please show me how. If it was your gun, and you informed me after the stop that you were unhappy about it I would appologize profusely, and we would probably carry on without a second thought. Maybe not, I guess you would come on here and blast me for it. I dunno.

Lastly, I dont want to hear any more bashing of the deputy I was riding with. He is definately beyond reproach, honest, and a model deputy sheriff. Fact is that he was perfectly within his rights as an LEO to confinsate the handgun temporarily, and as I have stated above, he did nothing wrong by handing it to me to admire while he ran the gentlemans plates\license.

So what it comes down to is whether some of you think it was right or wrong by your personal standards to handle this gun. Some of you think it was wrong. Some of you think it's ok. Some think it's unprofessional. The fact is that there was nothing illegal about it, and to bash and flame me is irresponsible/unprofessional/premature/etc.

Re: Ride-A-Long Introduced me to Fine Handguns!

We did. The stop ended up being about 30 minutes long because the deputy and I were talking to the fella. I am not familiar with realstate, but he did something with buying properties that were foreclosed, flipping them, and selling them. He operates some big business out of Houston. I would feel guilty doing that, especially knowing that so many folks have lost the homes he buys. Yikes. Either way, he apparently made a ton of money to afford that. A Bentley? Wowsers.

Re: Ride-A-Long Introduced me to Fine Handguns!

Touche'. Honestly, personally I wouldn't mind if anyone looked over and dry fired me handgun. Granted, this is a Glock, not an expensive 1911. And to be completely 100% honest, I didn't think about this being a bad thing until you mentioned it. I've known the deputy for years, served with him for 3 years in combat in Iraq and Afghan. He knows I am safe with weapons. He knows im not an idiot. He unloaded it and actually left the magazine and chambered round with the owner.

If the deputy and I didn't know eachother and weren't exxtremely close friends, I seriously doubt that he would have let me even touch it.

Af far as the driver of the car, I walked back to his car with the deputy and told the owner how jealous I was of his firearm. He asked if I got to see it and offered it again. I told him I had already checked it out and there was no issue.

In retrospect, after reading my initial post I can see how it would seem that this was completely without the owners knowlege. I should have cleared that up from the get-go.

Ride-A-Long Introduced me to Fine Handguns!

Did a ride-a-long this weekend with the local sheriff dept. This was the first time with them. I've ridden several times with a buddy of mine up in Arlington PD, but this was much much different. Hat is off to them, those guys are great. Professional, courteous, well informed. We pulled over a Bentley for speeding :) It was a gorgeous car. The Deputy comes back carrying handgun. I asked him what the deal was, and apparently the gentlemen didn't inform the deputy that he had a CHL, and was carrying upon contact, so he was disarmed until license and what not was run through the computer. The deputy asked me if I knew anything about finely crafted 1911's, and handed me this beautiful Ed Brown Kobra lightweight. I asked the deputy if the gentleman in the Bentley would likely notice if I swapped out his Ed Brown for my G36. We had a good laugh, the gentleman was cleared through and given back his weapon. For the record, this was a super, super expensive handgun that I was able to play around with at the owners expense. Felt a little guilty, but I have never seen one, much less held one and so I gave it an extremely thourough look over. Trigger pull was great in case your wondering "rlol"

All in all, a great time. I learned a ton, and further reinforced the idea I have been piddling around about going into law enforcement. Hmmm. Too bad I'll never be able to afford a 3,000 dollar Ed Brown custom on that budget :)
