I've actually been looking into trying out IDPA, more as a source of practice than for competition's sake (though who knows where it will go if I do get into it regularly).
Other than that I normally just work off 8 inch high-visibility targets (Caldwell and Shoot-n-C type stuff) at varying ranges. The range I use has a very nice metal range as well which can be an entertaining way of engaging multiple targets.
Have you tried Action Pistol yet? Not only is it hellfun but it can get you used to the whole IDPA thing. I haven't done IDPA yet but I plan on picking it up as part of my monthly shooting in addition to Action Pistol.
