When I started shooting IDPA (about 13 years ago) I was using my Glock 27, which is the .40 S&W version of the 26.
The reason I got something bigger is that the 26/27 family have short slides, meaning short sight radius, and it is hard to be consistently accurate at the typical IDPA distances. It is absolutely true IDPA uses shorter distances, but they use longer more often.
If your decision is that you simply WANT the G26 because of size, concealability, or whatever, by all means use it and gain whatever proficiency you can. Just accept that in many scenarios you will be up against the above thought.
If your focus is to build your skills and become more proficient with your gun, you can accomplish your purpose.
If your focus is to be competitive, it may take more practice at longer distances.
For me, anything beyond about 7 yards was a real challenge with the 27. Hopefully I've gotten better, hopefully you are better.
