NRA Classes ....

Tom wrote:OK, but let's not go overboard on this. True, it is a good thing for anyone with a CHL to know.
And perhaps CHL Instructors should have to demonstrate this skill.
However, I don't believe it should be added to the "required" shooting course for a CHL.
Tom
Tom,
Just an FYI, when I took my TC Workshop up in Fort Worth a few years back, the instructors talked about the (then) coming split of the Personal Protection class into Personal Protection Inside the Home and Personal Protection Outside the Home. One concern was what would happen in several states that, at least at that time, either ACCEPTED or REQUIRED the Personal Protection class for required CHL training. I honestly don't know what became of that. I'm just saying that sometimes states pick up stuff like that and use it for their purposes. This is totally a prognosication, but I wouldn't be surprised if something like that happening in some places with the Personal Protection Outside the Home class.

Am Training Counselor, Will Travel ....

txinvestigator wrote:But everyone knows who the NRA is, and in my observations, people respect the training.

Anyone know where I can get NRA certified around Dallas?
TxInvestigator, ilwatson - and any others interested.

I would be willing to travel to the Dallas/Fort Worth area to do some instructor classes - and the PPH class itself if there are people interested. It wouldn't be possible until sometime fairly early in 2007, but it is worth discussing.

The $$$ would have to be worked out, depending on how many classes, etc. A big factor is how many students, to spread fixed costs.

Look at http://www.argenttraining.com to get course descriptions.

It would be helpful for one of you up in that area would take care of coordination.

The Basic PPH class has several hours of range work, which can be done with .22's.

The PPH Instructor class has no range work ... it is assumed you already know how to shoot going into it.

The Basic Rifle, Pistol and Shotgun classes and the Instructor classes for the same disciplines do involve range time.

The Basic Instructor class has no range time.

Is this worth pursuing? :?: :?:

If so, send me a PM and we'll start working on it.

Instructor Certification

llwatson wrote:Thanks, Chas. I have not been able to find either instructor course offered locally, so I will be checking with y'all and, looks like, planning a trip to Houston to take care of this.

I agree that both of these are needed and definitely should be considered an important addition to the CHL instructors training. Thanks for continuing to "badger" the NRA for us!

Linda
Linda,

Roughly how long do you have to go before your 1 year is up on your certification? I might be able to work my schedule to get some people through BIT and then do a PPH Instructor Class. If that sounds worthwhile, send me a PM with a rough idea of when in early 2007 would be a good time frame. The PPH Instructor class can be done in one day.

Personal Protection Outside the Home (PPO)

llwatson wrote:Charles - Are you an NRA training counselor? I would like to get certified to instruct Personal Protection Outside the Home. I realize there are several steps in that process, so please let me know what you know about it. Thanks!
il ...
Charles is not a Training Counselor, but I am. Unfortunately I can't do a PPO Instructor class until I get it, and I'm not sure when that will be.

The first step in the process is to take what is called "Basic Instructor Training". It is a prerequisite for all of the discipline classes (rifle, pistol, etc.). If you take it, it is good for a year ... which means you can take any of the discipline classes within a year without having to repeat the BIT.

I will be putting together a class schedule for the early part of next year and will be leading off with BIT. If the PPO is the only disicpline you will be interested in, I can't say how long it will be until I can do the instructor class.

PP Outside the Home

llwatson wrote:Are you guys aware of anyone in the area teaching the new Personal Protection Outside the Home?

As of right now, to the best of my knowledge, NRA is early in the process of getting instructors qualified. I have no idea when it will be available for the general public, but it will probably be at least a few months. Charles may have a better handle on it.

One class ...

Lumberjack,
The two sessions make up one class. The first (Friday) will be roughly 3 hours or so, totally classroom. The second (Saturday) will be 7 or 8 hours, partly classroom and partly range. We split it into 2 days to give us more range time.
