That's why I love this place, info WITH lols. Yup, it's a trap like that one. When would you use it instead of clearing aimed down range though? Just seems like if there's a weapon, or operator, malfunctioning that safely pointed down range would be better than behind the line where others are standing. Plus, it really smarts on the shin.

Likely a silly question.
At my local range, there is a metal contraption which, I believe, is bolted to the deck. It has a roundish metal body and a mouth angling upward. I can only assume it would be to point a muzzle into in order to clear a malfunction? If this is the device's intended use, would it not be far less dangerous to aim down range and clear a weapon? It's probably a coffee maker or something and I'm a dork, but can anyone clue me in?
